The Leadership Starke County class of 2014-2015 has graduated. The 15 participants spent the past nine months honing community leadership skills, building self-confidence and interacting with community leaders. The class included a student from each of the county’s three high schools. Members met one day per month at sites throughout the county and learned about local history, geography and culture, the local economy, government, education and social services. Participants in this program learn about government, non-profit organizations, education, economic development and more services pertaining to the county.
An opening retreat is set for Friday, Sept. 6 where team and trust building activities will be reviewed as well as a personal assessment and what it is to be a leader.
Joan Haugh from Community Services of Starke County says it’s surprising what one can get out of this organization.
Jessup said the class emphasized three main ideas: networking, skill-building, and information.
“Lakes, rivers, wooded areas, farm land – you know, all those natural kind of environmental assets, that was certainly one of them,” said Jessup.
“Number one, they’re going to actually do the facilitation of it,” said Jessup. “In other words, do this all over the country with namely rural communities, and so they’re very knowledgeable and capable of talking about small, rural communities and how they can help grow and how they can help develop the community.”
The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation recently held an all-day conference with the Leadership Starke County organization, and the board reviewed a summary of the day’s events at their meeting this week.
Leadership Starke County is a nine-month training program to provide citizens with local knowledge of the Starke County area, skills, network, and confidence to become a leader in the community. Each of the nine sessions in the program focuses on topics related to the county, and allows participants to learn what “out of the box” thinking has done for Starke County and what they can do to improve it.
Leadership Starke County is gearing up for its first community leadership training class, and a few openings are still available.
