The Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry is still weighing and sorting the food donated by the Knox and North Judson communities following the Stamp Out Hunger campaign organized by the Campbell Soup Company and the National Association of Letter Carriers. On May 11, Americans were asked to put nonperishable food items in a bag near their mailbox to allow letter carriers to pick them up and donate the items to local food pantries across the nation, stocking the shelves of food pantries in America just in time for summer.
Judge Rejects Miller’s Plea Agreement
A special judge in South Bend has rejected former North Judson Clerk-Treasurer Connie Miller’s plea agreement. Jerome Frese told Miller he will not accept anything less than six years as punishment for the theft of more than $74,000 in public funds from the town of North Judson between Jan. 1, 2010 and Dec. 31, 2011.
The plea agreement would have sentenced Miller to three years on each count to be served concurrently and each of those sentences would be suspended to be served on probation. As part of the recommended plea agreement, Miler would be required to pay court costs, probation fees and serve one year on home detention through Starke County Community Corrections. She would also have to pay restitution of $52,044.
Again, that plea agreement was rejected by Judge Frese. A hearing in the matter has been set for June 7 at 10 a.m. ET in St. Joseph County.
Sentencing Hearing Set for Monday in the Case of Connie Miller
A sentencing hearing for former North Judson Clerk-Treasurer Connie Miller will be Monday, May 13 at 9 a.m. ET in St. Joseph Superior Court.
A sentence will be handed down by Special Judge Jerome Frese.
North Judson Receives Update from INDOT on U.S. 30 Railroad Repairs
The town of North Judson received an update on the repairs being done to the railroad crossing on U.S. 30 near Hanna. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry said the town board learned that INDOT awarded the bid to E&L Paving, and Henry explained that INDOT took the bids and told the council who submitted the lowest bid for the council to approve.
North Judson Town Board Again Revises Schedule of Fees Ordinance
The North Judson Town Board once again postponed the first reading of the town’s schedule of fees ordinance, and Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry said that was because they once again made a minor revision to the ordinance and will have to put it off until the next meeting on May 20. But, since the town is facing no particular deadline to get the ordinance passed, Henry said they’re taking their time to ensure they get it right.
North Judson Resident Seeking Zoning Variance; Public Hearing Scheduled
The North Judson Town Board Monday night heard from some concerned citizens regarding a zoning variance request from a town resident who is seeking to run an internet gun sale service from his home. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry explained that resident Jason LaMantia Sr. is seeking a variance from single-family residential zoning to a commercial zoning in order to allow him to run the business, but Henry said a number of citizens attended the meeting to gather more information on the request.
Sign-up Dates Approaching for Mint Fest Pageant
Application distribution dates are approaching for the Mint Festival pageant, and Festival Committee Member Teresa Trout said the committee has been working hard to get the event planning wrapped up. The committee is currently taking applications and have set aside five days this month to distribute applications at the North Judson Public Library and the Starke County Public Library.
Pageant sign-up sheets are available today at the Starke County Public Library from 2 to 4 p.m. The sign-up sheets will also be available at the library in Knox on May 10 from 3 to 5 p.m., and on May 11, sign-ups will take place at the North Judson Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon. On May 13, the North Judson Public Library will once again host sign-ups from 5 to 7 p.m.
NJ-SP Looking to Add New Business Math Class
The North Judson-San Pierre School Board has set its sights on offering a new class at the high school. Superintendent Lynn Johnson explained the corporation is looking to offer a business math class to high school students next year, and a special meeting was held yesterday morning to get the board’s approval to look into textbooks and other materials necessary for the class.

Monday was business as usual at the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation.
Last week regular business was interrupted after a bomb threat was found in the high school Thursday. The North Judson Police Department, the North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department, school administrators and bomb sniffing dogs scoured the school but no device was found.
Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum Celebrates 25th Anniversary
The 25th anniversary of the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum kicks off Saturday, May 4, with 25 percent off all train excursion fares for the entire day. Fire Hydrant Flushing Scheduled in North Judson and Knox
Fire hydrant flushing is a sure sign of spring. The town of North Judson will be clearing hydrants Sunday and Monday night, starting around 8 p.m. The city of Knox will start the process Monday and continue through Friday. If you experience cloudy, rusty or colored water during that time, run the faucet until it clears up.
NJ-SP Superintendent Responds to Bomb Threat
Police and school officials are following up leads as to who left a written bomb threat at North Judson-San Pierre High School last night. Superintendent Lynn Johnson says the perpetrator will be dealt with swiftly and severely both by the school and the authorities. The school handbook outlines punishment up to expulsion. NJ-SP Steps Up Security Following Bomb Threat
Expect a police presence this morning at North Judson-San Pierre schools. Corporation officials confirm a bomb threat was written at the high school. Police, fire and school officials and a K9 unit thoroughly searched the building and found no evidence of a bomb. This morning’s two-hour delay will allow administrators and law enforcement to meet with staff and review security procedures. School officials stress that the safety of students is their number one priority.
Register Now for Irish Pub 5K Run/Walk for Free T-Shirt
The Irish Pub in North Judson will soon be hosting their Second Annual Irish Pub 5K Run/Walk event, planned for Saturday, May 11 at 10 a.m. Jenny Craig of the pub told WKVI’s Lenny Dessauer that all donations from the event will go to the Hoosier Burn Camp, a summer camp experience for young men and women who have experienced injuries from burns. However, time is running out to sign up in time to get your free t-shirt. Craig said that only registrations that have been received by Saturday are eligible for a free shirt.
Kersting’s Cycle Center to Hold Blessing of the Bikes Ceremony Saturday
Kersting’s Cycle Center in North Judson will be holding their Blessing of the Bikes ceremony this weekend with a variety of entertainment and vendors. Pastor Adam Speicher of Clymers UMC and Lake Cicott UMC will be performing the blessing ceremony on Saturday following a performance by the Acousticats.
Speicher said the group will pray over water as a symbol before breaking into four teams, each of which will go individually through the crowd, blessing not only the machines but the riders as well. He said he hopes to have each team ask if any specific prayers are needed as they go through the crowd, giving each attendee the chance to have their own prayer.
North Judson Town Board Reviews Schedule of Fees
The North Judson Town Board last week reviewed the town’s schedule of fee ordinance and made a few small revisions. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry said the board will likely hold the first reading of the ordinance at their meeting on May 6.
Fire Hydrant Flushing Scheduled in North Judson
North Judson utility crews will be flushing fire hydrants in a few days. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry says they’ll start the preventive maintenance process around 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Should residents experience discolored or murky water during this time, they should leave their tap run until the water is clear.
North Judson Town Board Discusses Yard Sale Ordinance
The North Judson Town Board this week reviewed an ordinance regulating yard sales, and Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry said the new ordinance is basically a combination of the old ordinance with the one currently in the codification book. She said the board took the ordinance for review and they hope to have it up to date within the next month at the most.
NJ-SP Board in Beginning Stages of a Facility Study
The North Judson-San Pierre School Board is working with Emcor in order to put together a facility study. The board wants to see where all of the buildings are structurally and to see where improvements need to be made.
Superintendent Lynn Johnson explained that remodeling projects are planned down the road the Emcor will help identify what areas need the most work at all of the facilities. The initial findings will be reported to the board in future meetings.
The school board also approved the retirements of kindergarten teacher Cheryl Orkis, 5th grade teacher Terri Minix and classroom assistant Anita Ludlow. Shirley Mosher, who has worked in the cafeteria for 41 years, will also be retiring this school year.
