A local law enforcement agency is taking part in a national and statewide driver safety initiative. The next Click It or Ticket enforcement effort kicks off Friday and continues through May 31. Officers from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department will join more than 250 state and local law enforcement agencies on the lookout around the clock for drivers and passengers who aren’t wearing seat belts. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office will be constructing a training facility.
Deputy Ryan Hollopeter explained to the county commissioners on Monday that the officers are required to keep up firearms training, but no longer have a location to do so because of complaints of noise from neighbors.
The Marshall County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #130 has offered the use of their location at Hawthorne Road and State Road 10 for a firearms range and the construction of a 30’ x 60’ pole building on a concrete pad for classroom training. Deputy Hollopeter said there is enough property available for rifle and handgun distance training. He said other law enforcement agencies could also use the facility for similar training. It could be opened up to the public for officer-conducted firearms training.

Plymouth Police and Marshall County Sheriff’s Department officers worked extra shifts last month as part of a crackdown on impaired driving. During the Operation Pull Over blitz, county officers made five criminal arrests for offenses like operating while intoxicated – controlled substance, possession of marijuana, driving while suspended and driver never licensed. They also issued 132 traffic citations and warnings. Continue reading
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department has new crash investigation equipment to pinpoint exactly what a vehicle did before, during and immediately after a wreck. Crash data retrieval allows officers to download and analyze data stored in a vehicle’s airbag module. Event Data Recorders record information, including the vehicle’s precise speed several seconds before the crash, the timing of the braking of the vehicles involved and whether seatbelts were fastened. A two-vehicle accident in Marshall County Wednesday afternoon caused minor injuries to a young passenger.
Police say Kimberly Moore, 42, of Knox was stopped at the intersection of State Road 8 and State Road 17 and was preparing to turn north onto State Road 17. Moore entered the intersection and struck a vehicle driven by Nicole Risner, 30, of Plymouth who was traveling south on State Road 17, according to a news release. Both vehicles sustained significant damage. A five-year-old boy, who was seated in the front seat of Moore’s car, suffered minor head and neck injuries after the airbag deployed.
Deputies with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department will work additional hours to help reduce accidents and keep roadways safe in an upcoming enforcement blitz.
The department is participating in Operation Pull Over starting March 1 and ending March 31. Officers will focus on impaired driving, aggressive driving and seatbelt/child restraint violations, in addition to enforcing all traffic laws.
An Argos man walked away from a Tuesday morning vehicle versus train crash in Marshall County. Joshua Ramer, 33, was crossing the tracks on 18B and Dewberry Roads just before 11 a.m. in a 2005 Dodge pickup truck when the trailer he was pulling got stuck on the tracks. An eastbound Norfolk Southern train hit the truck and trailer, causing extensive damage to both and to the railroad crossing signal. Continue reading

Marshall County Sheriff Tom Chamberlin recognized several officers for going above and beyond the call of duty in their line of work.
Rick Prater, Ryan Hollopeter, Matt Brown, Brandon Cooper, Jonathan Bryant and Travis ONeal were recognized for their life-saving efforts in separate calls.
Officers Matt Brown and Brandon Cooper tended to a victim in June of 2013 who was not breathing and was turning blue. The officers initiated chest compressions and shocks from an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) until paramedics could arrive at the scene. The victim in this case survived due to the efforts of the officers and EMS.
