The Starke County Community Foundation is hosting its fourth annual Preschool Fair for local children and their families this evening at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox. Several local preschools will be represented, including Marshall-Starke Head Start. Education Director Dawn Wallen says regardless of which school you choose, structured learning is essential to development. She says 85 percent of brain development occurs between birth and age 5. SCCF Preschool Fair Scheduled Tomorrow Evening

Marshall-Starke Head Start Loses $90,000 in Funding
The Marshall-Starke Head Start program will be making a change when school begins again in September.
Mike Lintner, president and CEO of the Marshall-Starke Development Program, said a $90,000 funding cut due to the federal sequester has forced them to cut transportation to some students they serve.
Marshall-Starke Head Start Accepting Applications
Marshall-Starke Head Start is now accepting applications for fall enrollment for the 2013-2014 school year. Children must be residents of Marshall or Starke County and be 3 or 4 years old by Aug. 1. Transportation is provided and there is no cost to participate, as all preschool classroom activities are provided in an effort to promote school readiness.

The 15 Marshall-Starke Head Start students whose bus got hit by a truck this morning on the way to school have been released to their
parents. They were all taken to IU Health Starke Hospital to be checked out after bus 37 was hit by a truck as it was crossing Heaton Street at Lake Street by One Stop just before 8 a.m. Continue reading
Knox Police Investigating Crash Involving Head Start Bus and Truck
Passengers on Marshall-Starke Head Start Bus 37 are getting checked out at IU Health Starke Memorial Hospital after their bus was struck by a truck this morning at the intersection of Heaton and Lake Streets in downtown Knox. There’s no word yet on the extent of their injuries, and the crash remains under investigation. The bus was crossing Lake Street and was struck by the truck, which is registered to Standard Pallet, Inc. of Knox. A witness told investigators the bus had the right-of-way.
