Eligible voters who would like to cast ballots in the upcoming May 6 primary election have until Tuesday, April 8 to register. Prospective voters must be U.S. citizens who will be at least 18 on the day of the next election, have lived in their precinct for at least 30 days prior to the election and cannot be currently imprisoned after committing a crime. The easiest way to register is online at www.IndianaVoters.com. You will need to have a valid Indiana Driver’s License Number or Indiana State Identification number handy in order to complete the online registration. If you’re already registered to vote but need to update your name or address, you can also do so online.
Sheriff’s Races Dominate Primary Filings
Voters in Starke and Pulaski Counties will have their pick of candidates for the open sheriff’s seats in the May 6 primary. Incumbents Oscar Cowen and Mike Gayer are unable to run again due to term limits. Starke County filings include Democrats Bill Dulin, Harold Smith and Dennis Fornelli, who is the latest candidate to file for that office. Republicans Billy Bope and Greg Wireman are also running for sheriff. In Pulaski County, Republicans Jeff Richwine, Brian Gaillard and Jeffrey Heims are seeking the nomination. So are Democrats Paul Grandstaff and Jim Jenkins.
Would-be Candidates Have Until Noon to File
Candidates for political office in the May primary have until noon local time today to file the necessary paperwork to run for office. Several countywide and township positions are up for grabs. Voters in both Starke and Pulaski Counties will elect new sheriffs. Neither Oscar Cowen nor Mike Gayer can run again due to term limits. Voters in both counties will also elect a prosecuting attorney, coroner, clerk of the circuit court and assessor. County council seats in districts 1 through 4 are also on the ballots in both counties.
Races Shape Up As More Candidates File
The latest round of candidate filings for the May primary includes two incumbent Starke County Council members, one of whom already has a potential general election opponent. Republican Anthony “Tony” Radkiewicz, Sr. and Democrat Jennifer Davis are both running for the District 2 County Council seat. Davis is giving up her seat on the county commission to run for the council. District 2 includes part of Center and California Townships. Council President David Pearman has also filed for reelection in council district 3, which runs south through the southern half of Oregon Township through Washington and North Bend Townships. Republican Talia Reed has also filed her candidacy for the Starke County Council District I seat. It includes the rest of Center and Oregon Townships along with the Davis and Jackson precincts.
Fred Baker files Candidacy for Starke County Council at-Large Seat
Retired Starke County Police officer Fred “Freddie” Baker is the latest candidate to sign up for the May primary. Baker has filed for a position on the Starke County Council. He will be running in the Democrat Primary as a council at large candidate.
Other candidates to file for Starke County Council at-large seats include Republican Bryan H. Cavender, Democrat Robert (Bob) Sims, Democrat Judy Benninghoff and Republican Talia Reed.
