Former Sheriff, Chief Deputy Under Investigation

 
 

A former sheriff is the subject of a criminal investigation into alleged misappropriation of funds and missing equipment. A State Board of Accounts audit of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department released this morning found missing firearms valued at more than $7,500 and ammunition purchases of more than $13,000 between 2011 and 2014. The latter are incompatible with the firearms in inventory and used by the county sheriff’s officers, according to the audit. Mike Gayer was sheriff at that time. New Charges Filed Against Convicted Murderer, Child Molester

A convicted murderer and child molester is back in jail after his arrest yesterday at a public library in Indianapolis. Richard Dobeski, 67, was picked up on a LaPorte County warrant for four counts of failure to register as a sex offender. All are Level 6 felonies, which carry a penalty of between 6 months and 2.5 years in prison. A failure to register charge will also be filed in Marion County, according to officials with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department. Dobeski was released last week from the Indiana Department of Correction New Carlisle facility. Continue reading

Pulaski County Voters Elect Sheriff, Commissioner

 
 

In Pulaski County Republican Jeff Richwine is the sheriff-elect. He beat Democrat Paul Grandstaff in the contest to replace Mike Gayer, who is retiring due to term limits. Republican Bud Krohn Jr. beat Democrat John Plowman in the county commissioners race. He will replace incumbent Tracey Shorter, who did not seek reelection. Neither did Democrat Councilman Ron Powers. His daughter Linda Powers beat Republican Pam Chumley in that race. Continue reading

Pulaski County Sheriff warns of possible scams

If you get a phone call stating you’ve won $1 million, you may not want to quit your job just yet. Pulaski County Sheriff Mike Gayer says an area resident recently got such a call and was told he needed to send $1,500 to collect his winnings. Gayer says these scams are common and callers or written correspondence will actually use the name of a legitimate lottery or sweepstakes to further convince a potential victim.
Warning signs include a letter, email or text message announcing you won a prize in a lottery or sweepstakes you didn’t enter. Scammers also ask “winners” to send a fee or bank account details to collect a prize. Legitimate lotteries do not require you to pay a fee to collect winnings.
