Winter Testing at Daytona International Speedway Scheduled

DAYTONAPreSeasonThunder14_4CAll three NASCAR series will be at Daytona International Speedway Jan. 9 through the 14 for testing.

A few changes have been made to the aerodynamics to the Gen-6 car and those will be tested in this opportunity. The NASCAR Sprint Cup series teams and drivers will practice drafting on the first day of testing on Jan. 9 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. ET on the Daytona track. Fan fest is set from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET where fans with wristbands can participate in an autograph session with Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Joey Logano, Matt Kenseth, Jamie McMurray, Danica Patrick and Tony Stewart. If you purchasing wristbands the day of the event, you can participate in an autograph session with AJ Allmendinger, Aric Almirola, Marcos Ambrose, Austin Dillon, David Gilliland, Denny Hamlin, Casey Mears, David Ragan, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Martin Truex Jr.

Top Performances of 2013

Thirteen different drivers won races in 2013 n the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series led by Kyle Busch, who won five races in the series. Busch is now second on the all-time win list at 35. Ron Hornaday, Jr. holds that top spot with 51.

Top Drivers: Matt Crafton. Crafton only won once in the 2013 season, but consistency allowed for Crafton to claim the Championship – the first for ThorSport Racing. Ty Dillon and James Buescher were given honorable mention as they finished in a dead heat for the second spot in the season standings. Dillon finished ahead of Buescher by three points.

Notre Dame Graduate Named President of Iowa Speedway

Jimmy Small has been named President of Iowa Speedway.

Small, 28, has six years of experience with NASCAR in various business-building capacities. In his most recent duties, he served a senior manager for team marketing services with the NASCAR Industry Services department. He was the business and marketing liason with teams and drivers in all three national series.

Small started in the sport in 2008.

Gen-6 Test a Success at Charlotte Motor Speedway

NASCAR TestingIt was music to the ears of race fans to hear the cars back on the track Wednesday after the NASCAR season ended on Nov. 17 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

This wasn’t specifically a race, but a test to gather data for the development of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series intermediate-track package for 2014.

Sixteen race teams and 30 drivers were on hand to test several changes to the Gen-6 car. Officials believe that the changes will enhance racing.

Richard Childress Racing Announces 2014 Plans

750As expected, Richard Childress named Austin Dillon as the driver of the No. 3 Dow Chemicals Chevrolet in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in a press conference at Charlotte Motor Speedway Wednesday afternoon.

Executives from Dow Chemicals expressed their enthusiasm by expanding their partnership with NASCAR. The company already provides safety innovations in the sport and will sponsor 16 races with Austin piloting the No. 3.

NASCAR Test Sees Red Flag, Test Moved to Wednesday

A test session for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams at Charlotte Motor Speedway was postponed Monday due to rain. The test will begin on Wednesday when inclement weather is expected to cease.

Cars will be on the track from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. The purpose of the test is to see how a taller spoiler and changes to the splitter will affect racing in the 2014 season. Experts believe the changes will slow down the cars.

Michael McDowell Signs One-Year Deal with Leavine Family Racing

Michael McDowell will be driving the No. 95 Ford for Leavine Family Racing in 2014.

McDowell worked with the team at this season’s Sprint All-Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway and indicated that he’s ready to get started.

“I feel pretty good looking ahead to next season,” McDowell said. “I’m looking forward to getting back to the shop and seeing what we have on tap for the winter in order to continue to get better.”

Erik Jones Named Winner in Snowball Derby

A disqualification gave Kyle Busch Motorsports driver Erik Jones the opportunity to hoist the Snowball Derby champion trophy Sunday night.

A post-race inspection found that race-winner Chase Elliott’s team used tungsten which is illegal in Super Late Model competition. The illegal weight cost Elliott the trophy and it was instead awarded to second place finisher Erik Jones.

Jones was the defending champion going into Sunday’s 300 lap race at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.

NASCAR Drivers Roll out Super Late Models to Participate in Snowball Derby

Dollar General Increases Sponsorship with Joe Gibbs Racing

Dollar General and Joe Gibbs racing have agreed to a 27-race sponsorship with Matt Kenseth and the No. 20 team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2014. That’s 10 races more than in the 2013 season.

The No. 20 yellow and black Dollar General Toyota will be featured at the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Talladega Speedway in May, Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July, Richmond International Speedway in September, the first race of the Chase at Chicagoland Speedway, and Charlotte Motor Speedway in October, plus four other races in the season.

New Crew Chief Named for Aric Almirola’s Sprint Cup Team

Trent Owens will call the shots for the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM) Team in the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup season where Aric Almirola is the driver.

He was most recently the crew chief for Kyle Larson’s No. 32 Turner Scott Motorsports team in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Owens led Larson to 17 top-10 and nine top-five finishes in the 2013 season. Larson finished ninth overall in the standings.

Iowa Speedway Has a New Owner

You may be familiar with the new owners of Iowa Speedway. NASCAR.

NASCAR’s agreement with Iowa Speedway was finalized Wednesday and is effective immediately.
Officials explained in a release that the purchase of the speedway was a strategic move designed to expand event experiences and fan engagement. Another reason, according to NASCAR, was to solidify the future of one of the premier racing and entertainment facilities in the Midwest.

Montoya Performs Well in IndyCar Test

It had been since the year 2000 when he last placed his foot on the gas pedal in an IndyCar, but Juan Pablo Montoya returned to the sport in fast fashion during an IndyCar test Monday at Sebring International Raceway.

The newest addition to Team Penske drove the No. 2 Dallara/Chevrolet for 20 laps and was just less than half-a-second behind teammate Will Power’s top time in the morning session. In the afternoon session, the former NASCAR driver was able to surpass the fast lap time established by Power before the day’s testing ended.

Son of NASCAR Driver Showing Promise as Race Car Driver

He was two car lengths behind the winner of the Southeast Limited Late Models event on Sunday, but second-place finisher 13-year-old Todd Gilliland showed that he’s got some skills in the seat of a race car. Todd is the son of NASCAR Sprint Cup driver David Gilliland and drove in just his third race in a stock car on Sunday at Myrtle Beach Speedway in South Carolina.

Todd Gilliland started the event in the fifth position and slipped back to 13th early. That didn’t phase him as he started climbing through the field. By lap 58, he entered into the top 10 and was battling for the third spot on lap 79. With seven laps to go, he reached the second spot.

Ty Dillon is making the move up to the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the sponsor he had while in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will make the move with Dillon.

Bass Pro Shops will serve as Dillon’s primary sponsor on the No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro with Richard Childress Racing for 11 races, including the DRIVE4COPD 300 race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Sport Clips Haircuts will Stay with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2014

Sport Clips Haircuts will be the primary sponsor for nine races with Joe Gibbs Racing in the next season.

The company will serve as the primary sponsor for Denny Hamlin and the No. 11 Toyota Camry for two races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Sport Clips will also be the sponsor for six races in the No. 11 Toyota with Elliott Sadler behind the wheel in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Drew Herring will pilot the car at Chicagoland Speedway on Sept. 13 in the Nationwide Series.

NCWTS Crew Member Suspended for Violating Substance Abuse Policy

NASCAR has announced that a crew member in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series has been indefinitely suspended for violating the sanctioning body’s Substance Abuse Policy.

Curtis Martin Jr., was found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 19 (violation of the NASCAR Substance Abuse Policy) of the 2013 NASCAR Rule Book.

This reportedly occurred on Nov. 12.

Martin is also a former crew chief in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
