Democrats Emerge Victorious in Starke County

Democratic Party DonkeyElection Day was all about the Democrats in Starke County.

“We had a strong bunch of candidates this time. Not only that, but we had the backing of the Democrat Party. Everyone worked together and we were able to do stuff for the candidates that we haven’t done in the past. The bottom line was it paid off,” Democratic Party Chairman Kenny Wallace said.

Case Against Former North Judson Clerk-Treasurer Will Be Heard By St. Joseph Court Judge

The criminal case against former North Judson Clerk-Treasurer Connie Miller will now be heard by the Judge of the St. Joseph Superior Court, Jerome Frese.

This announcement comes after attorney Todd E. Wallsmith has taken the defendant’s case and will appear as her counsel, which presents a problem as he is within the third degree of relationship to Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall’s wife. According to Indiana law, a judge must disqualify himself in any proceeding in which a person within the third degree of relationship to the judge’s spouse is acting as a lawyer in the proceeding.

New State Law To Affect Age Of Emancipation In Child Support

On July 1, a new state law takes effect involving the age of emancipation for purposes of child support. Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff said custodial parents and non-custodial parents need to be aware that the emancipation age will change from 21 to 19.

“Custodial parents will no longer have the right to receive child support once their youngest child turns 19, unless the court has found the children to be disabled,” said Bourff. “Payment on past-due child support is not affected by this change. If there are court ordered payments for educational support, that’s something separate from child support and there would have to be an additional hearing in the future to discuss what will happen regarding that.”
