Students are typically thrilled when summer break finally begins but individuals who rely on school meals for breakfast and lunch could be feeling bitter sweet about the end of the school year. Luckily, the Summer Food Service Program has a mission to make sure no Hoosier goes hungry.
Starke County Youth Club Honors IU Health Starke Hospital
IU Health Starke Hospital’s investment in the youth of the community has earned them recognition from the Starke County Youth Club. Executive Director Irene Szakonyi presented IU Health Starke Hospital President Craig Felty the Aim High Award in recognition of the hospital’s top pledge of $5,000 during the recent radiothon. The daylong fundraiser on WKVI raised $41,000 for the club. It provides after school and summer enrichment programs for students from Knox, North Judson-San Pierre and Oregon-Davis schools at sites throughout the county. Continue reading
O-D Students Perform Well on ECA Tests
The End of Course Assessment (ECA) test results at Oregon-Davis Schools have the administration excited about the progress the students are making in Math and English/Language Arts. The ECAs are taken at the end of the school year to measure student growth.

More Oregon-Davis Students Choosing Career Path
Oregon-Davis students have stepped up efforts to join vocational programs for the next school year.
Superintendent Greg Briles said there were two or three students involved in vocational programs last year. Eighteen students will be participating in Auto Tech, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Graphic Imaging, Health Science, Precision Machining, and Welding in the 2015-2016 school year.
Wireless Infrastructure Upgrade Leads Summer Projects at O-D
Some extensive projects will be in the works this summer at the Oregon-Davis School Corporation.
Thanks to the federal E-Rate Program, Superintendent Greg Briles says the wireless access and switches will be upgraded in both school buildings.

That’s the message Oregon-Davis Middle School language arts teacher Angie Radke shared with high school students there after a mock drunk driving crash in the school parking lot. Radke’s best friend, Brooklyn Boo, was killed by a drunk driver in 1998, a week after their junior prom at North Judson-San Pierre High School. Continue reading
Starke County Youth Club Programs Help Bridge Achievement Gap
The Starke County Youth Club’s after-school programs help bridge the achievement gap for students. Executive director Irene Szakonyi says that’s disparity in performance levels among groups of youngsters. Research indicates children who come from low-income homes don’t perform as well on standardized tests as their more affluent classmates, nor do they get as good of grades. Szakonyi says 60 percent of children served come from low-income homes and start kindergarten behind their peers as a result. Continue reading
Starke County Youth Club Programs Benefit Children and Parents
The Starke County Youth Club’s after-school programs offered at sites around the county benefit more than just the students who take part in them. Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says they serve as a bridge between school and home for youngsters, for whom the most critical hours of the day are between 3 and 6 p.m. School is out, but parents aren’t home from work yet. Starke County Youth Club Radiothon Set for Friday
Mark your calendars, and get your checkbooks ready. The 8th Annual Starke County Youth Club Radiothon on WKVI will take place this Friday. Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says the organization has been serving youngsters with after-school, summer and recreational programs since 2001.

Oregon-Davis School Board to Discuss Make-up Days
The Oregon-Davis School Board will discuss make-up days when they meet tonight.
Students need to make up days of instruction due to weather-related school closures this winter. Three days were built into the school calendar and six days were missed.
In addition to make-up days, the Oregon-Davis School Board members will discuss area school calendar dates. The board will consider an agreement with Five Star for Technology Services for the 2015-2016 school year.
Starke County Humane Society Benefits from OD Chemistry Experiment
The animals at the Starke County Humane Society are the beneficiaries of an Oregon-Davis High School class project. Chemistry 2 students applied the principles of stoichiometry, which is the study of the amounts of substances involved in reactions, to baking. Continue reading
Starke County K9 Performs Routine Sweep at Local School
The Starke County Sheriff’s Department K9 did a routine sweep at the Oregon-Davis School Corporation on Thursday morning.
Handler Rob Olejniczak took K9 Terror around the corporation to search for possible drugs in lockers and the parking lot. No evidence of any illegal drugs was found.
Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin and the officers are appreciative of the school’s effort to keep Starke County a safe environment. Principal Tim Pletcher and School Resource Officer Frank Lonigro were also recognized for their efforts.

Ancilla Schedules Financial Aid Night at Oregon-Davis
Ancilla College officials will be at Oregon-Davis High School tonight to share information about applying for college financial aid. They’ve scheduled a presentation about completing the FAFSA at 6 p.m. and will remain to help parents and students complete the form. It’s due March 10 and must be submitted in order to be considered for any federal grants, low-interest loans or scholarships. Continue reading
Oregon-Davis School Board Establishes Strategic Planning Committee
The Oregon-Davis School Board established a strategic planning committee this week.
Superintendent Greg Briles gave testing statistics to the board members and all of the initiatives made to improve education at the corporation. He suggested putting together a committee to establish priorities, a vision, a mission, and goals for what they want the students to be able to do when they walk out of the doors. He stressed that the Oregon-Davis School Corporation is a community school.
Oregon-Davis School Board Votes Against School Lunch Increase
The Oregon-Davis School Board members discussed lunch prices, but Superintendent Greg Briles explained the item to increase prices didn’t need to be on the evening’s agenda.
Briles said he was initially looking at funds in the food service department, and he thought that the board may need to raise the price by five cents and maybe even ten cents. If the board were to consider a five cent increase, it would amount to an additional $876 per year at the elementary level.
Briles said he would be looking deeper internally with commodities and into the corporation’s work with the Northern Indiana Educational Services Center (NIESC) before increasing prices. He noted that there could be more funds to take care of what is needed in the school’s budget.

Kankakee Valley Broadcasting will present the 50th annual TCU Bi-County Basketball Tournament in its entirety for the first time. Tony Ross and his crew will have the tip-off between Triton and LaVille tonight on MAX 98.3-FM or possibly WKVI-FM and online at www.SportsToTheMax.net. They will also provide scoring updates from the other first round games during their broadcast. Argos is at Culver, John Glenn is playing host to Bremen, and New Prairie will be at Oregon-Davis. Oregon-Davis School Board Reorganizes, Discusses Board Compensation
The Oregon-Davis School Board member Christopher Lawrence took the oath of office at the beginning of last night’s school board meeting as he was elected for another term to the board in the November election. After that was complete, the board reorganized. Lawrence respectfully stated that he thought it was time for someone else to lead the board and took his name out of consideration for board president. Kurt Hayes was elected president of the board with a unanimous vote. Andrea McIntosh was elected vice president while Shirley Budka will serve as board secretary. Those board positions were also approved by a unanimous vote.
The school board voted to retain their regular meeting schedule on the third Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. CT. They may call special meetings or work sessions as necessary. The measure passed by majority vote of 4 to 1. Lee Nagai abstained from the vote.
