Driver Arrested After Head-On Collison With Snow Plow

An Akron man faces multiple charges following a head-on collision with a Marshall County snow plow truck Saturday night. It happened just after 10 p.m. on Michigan Road just north of 18C Road, according to the crash report provided by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. A 2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer driven by Juan L. Ruiz, 22, was reportedly southbound on Michigan Road, crossed the center line and struck the plow truck driven by Jon A. Bates, 51, of Bourbon. The impact of the crash caused the TrailBlazer to spin counterclockwise before coming to rest facing east in the southbound lane. Ruiz and his front seat passenger were trapped in the SUV and had to be cut from the wreckage by members of the Argos Fire Department. Both were treated at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth. Police say alcohol was a factor in the crash. Ruiz faces charges of operating while intoxicated, public intoxication and operation of a motor vehicle having never obtained a license.

 

Unlicensed Driver His NIPSCO Truck, Injures Driver

 
 
A NIPSCO meter reader was treated at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth after his truck was rear-ended by another vehicle Friday morning in Culver. Ryan N. Misch was westbound on State Road 10 west of State Road 17 when Jonas G. Crispen struck his truck. Crispen told a Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputy he had no memory of the accident. The deputy checked Crispen’s driving record and discovered that his Indiana learner’s permit was suspended due to an infraction. Officers measured tire marks at the scene and determined Crispen’s vehicle ran into the NIPSCO truck. A copy of the crash report has been forwarded to the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office. The Indiana State Police and Culver Police Department also assisted at the scene.

Project Lead The Way Grant Offered to Marshall County

 
 

Five counties in North Central Indiana may have a great opportunity for students in the near future. Plymouth Schools Superintendent Dan Tyree said a one-to-one grant could come to the county to provide unique technology to students.

“Five counties in North Central Indiana received an offer from Project Lead the Way that they would provide a one-to-one grant to us that would be large enough for every school and every grade to offer Project Lead the Way,” explained Tyree. “If every grade in every school were to do it in that five county area, it would be about a $2.8 million grant.”

Plymouth City Council to Consider Tree and Shrub Ordinance

  
 
The Plymouth City Council will consider an ordinance for adoption during their meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET in the city council chambers, 124 N. Michigan Street in Plymouth.

The ordinance concerns cornering trees and shrubs as recommended by the Urban Forestry and Flower Committee. Several changes to wording has been made for the council’s approval. All provisions are in case a resident wants to plant, prune or remove a tree along a city street.

Plymouth Woman Arrested for Theft

A Plymouth teen was arrested on Wednesday after an investigation into a theft incident.

Plymouth Police Department officers received information about the theft of a purse and its contents from the Country Charm Laundromat in Plymouth on Dec. 15. After reviewing surveillance video, the suspect was identified as 19-year-old Jessica Cavinder.

Cavinder was brought in for questioning on Wednesday and subsequently arrested. She was booked into the Marshall County Jail on a preliminary charge of Theft. Her bond was set at $3,000 cash.

One Injured in Marshall County Accident

 
 

One person was flown from the scene of a two vehicle accident U.S. 31 and 7B Road in Marshall County Friday morning.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department deputies found that a passenger car was southbound on U.S. 31 approaching the intersection with 7B Road in the driving lane. A semi was also southbound but in the passing lane and for some unknown reason, the passenger car turned into the path of the semi. The semi struck the car on the driver’s side.

Plymouth Man Sentenced on Felony Meth Manufacturing Charge

 
 
A Plymouth man who was cooking meth in the basement of a Washington Street residence according to court documents has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Jamie Wacasey, 34, previously pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a housing complex. The charge stems from his April 30 arrest during which items used to make meth were also found in the basement of the Plymouth home. The arrest was a result of a joint investigation between the Plymouth Police, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police. Marshall Superior Court Judge Robert O. Bowen ordered four years of Wacasey’s sentence to be suspended and made purposeful incarceration a term. Additionally his sentence will be served concurrently to a proposed one-year sentence that’s pending in Marshall Superior Court for the revocation of Wacasey’s probation.

Two Men Arrested Following Armed Altercation

 
 
An early morning altercation at a Plymouth residence last Friday sent two men to jail. Officers responding to a home in the 15000 block of Carriage Way just after 2 a.m. reportedly found Drew Flora, 24, of Plymouth, and Sean Benner, 23, of Culver at the home. While questioning the men, the officers reportedly discovered that the altercation involved a firearm. Benner is free on bond and faces a charge of battery resulting in bodily injury. Flora’s bond was set at $50,000 on charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon, criminal confinement with a deadly weapon and pointing a firearm.

Truck Driver Injured in Marshall County Multiple Semi Crash

 
 

A truck driver from Westville was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Plymouth for treatment of injuries sustained in a four tractor-trailer crash that shut down the westbound lanes of U.S. 30 Monday afternoon. The wreck occurred just after 2 p.m. Eastern Monday afternoon on U.S. 30 at King Road in Marshall County. Skender Emini, 36, of Ellyn, Illinois, fell asleep at the wheel, according to investigators with the Indiana State Police, and woke up just moments before rear-ending another semi that was stopped at the intersection. The force of the crash propelled those two rigs into two other stopped tractor-trailers. Jeffrey Wildermuth, 55, of Westville, sustained neck and back injuries. Additionally a tank of argon gas spilled from one of the trucks as it came to rest. According to the state police, the gas is inert and did not pose a hazard to the public. The highway was closed for nearly two hours as crews worked to clean up the wreckage.

 

Plymouth Man Sentenced to Ten Years in Prison

A ten-year prison sentence was handed down to a Plymouth man Thursday afternoon in Marshall County Superior Court 1.

Judge Robert O. Bowen accepted a sentencing agreement between Andrew White’s defense attorney and Chief Deputy Prosecutor Nelson Chipman where White pleaded guilty to charges of Manufacturing Methamphetamine and Possession of Stolen Property. White was sentenced to 10 years on the Manufacturing Methamphetamine charge and 18 months for the Possession of Stolen Property charge. Four years of the sentence was suspended.

Probation Violations Send Plymouth Man to Prison

A Plymouth man will be going to prison after violating the terms of his probation.

Gregory Mullins, 35, was sentenced on Jan. 10, 2010 to ten years in the Indiana Department of Corrections with four years of that sentence suspended. After his release from prison on Feb. 7, 2012, he was placed on two years of reporting probation. In August of 2012, Assistant Chief Probation Officer Abby Caswell found that Mullins violated probation. Urinalysis examinations returned in September of 2012 that detected the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamine. This led to the filing of the revocation of probation.

Marshall County Commissioners Approve Recommendation for Metronet Funding

  
 

The Marshall County Commissioners will send a recommendation to the county council for funding to support the Metronet project.

St. Joseph Valley Metronet will be laying down a fiber-optic network infrastructure from St. Joseph County to Plymouth with the cost being split between the county and the City of Plymouth. St. Joseph County, South Bend, the City of Plymouth and Marshall County are paying for the conduit for the project while other entities are paying for the telecommunications cable.

Fire at Brother’s Nightclub Under Investigation

 The cause of a fire in Plymouth that wreaked havoc on a nightclub is still under investigation. Investigators say the fire occurred just before 11 p.m. Sunday night in the 400 block of West LaPorte Street at Brother’s nightclub.

Firefighters have stated that they believe the fire started in the basement but no definite cause has been determined.

No customers were reportedly inside the club when the fire occurred and no injuries have been reported.

Two Arrested on Dealing Marijuana Charges in Marshall County

 
 

Two out of county residents were arrested by Marshall County officers after a traffic stop in the early morning hours on Thursday.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle owned by 54-year-old Leisa Brooks of Indianapolis near the U.S. 31 and U.S. 30 interchange. Officers conducted an investigation and allegedly found approximately 200 grams of marijuana.

Plymouth PD Investigating Restaurant Burglary

Plymouth Police Department detectives are investigating a burglary at the Symphony Family Restaurant.

Officers received word that on Friday, Nov. 15 at 12:26 a.m. that a burglary was taking place at the business at 1410 N. Michigan Street. The manager of the facility surprised the suspect when he entered the building. The suspect fled on foot from the restaurant and no vehicle was seen.

Plymouth Man Sentenced to 20 Years on Child Molesting Charge

A Plymouth man was sentenced to the maximum allowable sentence after pleading guilty in a plea agreement with the State to a charge of Child Molesting, a Class B felony.

Christopher Detrick, 38, pleaded guilty to the offense on Aug. 30 in Marshall County Superior Court 1, just four days before his trial by jury was to begin. During that hearing, Detrick admitted to molesting a 7-year-old girl. The victim, her mother and her sister were living with Detrick at the time. The acts occurred between February 2011 through March 2012.

Pride of Plymouth Marching Band Finishes 10th in State Final

 
 
The Pride of Plymouth Marching Band finished 10th at the Indiana State Music Association’s marching band finals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Ten bands competed in Class B on Saturday and Plymouth took the field at 10:13 a.m. Plymouth was the smallest band to perform in that class and Director Bryan Ames said he was proud of the way the band played. Greenwood ended up with the first place trophy in the class.

The last time the Pride of Plymouth Marching Band went to the state level was in 2010 in Class C.

Plymouth Man Sentenced to 12 Years in DOC

A 12-year prison sentence was handed to a Plymouth man in Marshall County Superior Court 1 on Thursday afternoon.

Raymond VanBlaricom, 27, admitted in open court that he manufactured and possessed methamphetamine on May 19 at a home in Bremen. That night, a homeowner told Bremen Police that two people came to her home with drugs and then began manufacturing methamphetamine. She ordered the pair to leave the home and refused. When police arrived at the scene, they found VanBlaricom and another suspect in the bathroom in the residence with an active one pot methamphetamine lab.
