Pulaski County’s annual health insurance bill could be going up by more than $200,000, following a sharp increase in claims. Steve Gregory with Shepherd Insurance told the county commissioners last week that the plan hasn’t been running well. Cigna initially wanted to raise the cost by almost 44 percent but they negotiated it down to less than 20 percent.

The Pulaski County Council took the first step Monday in making funding available for the county’s COVID-19 response, but not without calling for more oversight when spending it. The county’s incident command team had asked for permission to spend up to $250,000 out of the county’s Riverboat Fund.

The Pulaski County Health Department will have to wait a bit longer before it can spend recently-released grant funding. Last month, the county council voted to advertise an additional appropriation request to spend $39,500 of the $90,000 it received from the state, with the request up for final approval this week.

The Pulaski County Council still hasn’t made any decisions about reconfiguring its local income taxes, but members did agree last week to keep thinking about some options. President Jay Sullivan reminded the rest of the council that the county will have to come up with additional revenue, since a special local income tax is scheduled to expire at the end of 2020.

The county council voted five-to-one last week to finalize a series of additional appropriations. That included almost $57,000 for the elevator work.

The Pulaski County Council took action Tuesday to fix shortfalls in a few departments’ overtime budgets. Council members agreed to transfer $45,000 out of the EMS Department’s staff line item to cover overtime expenses through the end of the year, at the request of EMS Director Brandon DeLorenzo.

Cyber security insurance will end up costing Pulaski County more than double what was originally thought. Back in August, the county commissioners voted to move forward with a policy from EMC Insurance, at a cost of just over $4,100 a year. But during last week’s meeting, insurance agent Gene Timm explained that the company would not provide standalone coverage.

Back in July, the county commissioners disbanded the county’s IT department, and later agreed to contract IT services out to DeGroot Technology. Now, DeGroot has notified officials that it will stop providing services to the county in January.

A proposed tax adjustment was narrowly voted down by the Pulaski County Council Monday. The change would have resulted in a slight decrease in the county’s local income tax rate, while allowing property taxes to increase on non-homestead property.
