The Pulaski County Commissioners this week passed a motion amending the zoning ordinance to allow for manufactured housing at the recommendation of Building Inspector David Dare. Dare told the commissioners that the Advisory Plan Commission recommended to him that he request an amendment to the current zoning ordinance after they learned that several manufactured homes have been established in agricultural zoning districts – something that the zoning ordinance does not allow for.
Pulaski County 4-H Achievement Royalty Named
The 4-H Achievement Royalty has been named at the Pulaski County Fair. Eight candidates qualified for the honor of vying for royalty, and this past weekend, the royalty and royalty court were named.
The program was held on Saturday, June 29 at 3 p.m. ET at the Entertainment Stage during the 4-H Fair, when Brooke Daugherty and Eric Newman were named the 4-H Achievement Royalty. Royalty Court was Walker Wank, Cole Hoover, Dustin Dahn, and David Putt.
The Starke County 4-H Achievement Royalty event is approaching as well, planned for Monday, July 15 around 6:15 p.m. The Achievement Royalty candidates in Starke County include Rachel Lenig, Taylor Kemble, Kamie Salkeld, Katie Back, Kayla Bailey, Katelyn Surfus, Kayla Grossman, Natalie Radtke, and Erica Pick.
Two Pulaski County Community Town-wide Yard Sales Planned
Two communities have opportunities for you to find bargains in your neighborhood.
Francesville’s Spirit Day celebration is set for Saturday, July 13 where town-wide garage sales are planned beginning around 8 a.m. ET. Forty-one locations are on the map that will feature a variety of items for sale. Food will be served at the Francesville Fire Station as a fundraiser for September’s Francesville Fall Festival. Maps can be picked up at the fire station.
Food Finders Mobile Pantry Heads to Winamac July 12
The Food Finders Mobile Pantry is heading to Winamac on Friday, July 12, when those in need can pick up food beginning at 11 a.m. Food Finders has asked that participants not come more than 15 minutes early for health and safety reasons. The pantry will distribute food at the Pulaski County Human Services office, located at 115 W. Pearl St.
Possible items to be distributed include frozen meat, baked goods, beverages, vegetables, snacks, and cereal, and the organization is requesting that participants bring a laundry basket or box in which to carry the food home.
The mobile pantry is a program that is available to those who meet 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines of $1772 monthly or $21,257 annual income for a single household, $2392 monthly or $28,694 annually for a two-member household, or $3,011 monthly or $36,131 annually for a three-member household. Four member households must earn less than $43,568 annually; five-member households $51,005; and six-member households $58,442. For each additional household member, add $620 per month.
Medaryville Rescinds Letters of Mowing Ordinance Violation
The Medaryville resident who was facing a number of violations of the town’s mowing ordinance has been let off the hook after he reportedly cleaned up the properties and is now in compliance. According to town council member Derrick Stalbaum, resident Brian Capouch has been hard at work over the last week or so getting the properties cleaned up and compliant with the ordinance.
Number of Events Planned for Pulaski County 4-H Fair This Weekend
The 2013 Pulaski County 4-H Fair continues today with a number of exhibits, programs and entertainment planned throughout the day.
Entries for the goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep and swine livestock competition start the day off at 5 a.m. and run til 10 a.m., with open class exhibits entered from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. A meeting of livestock exhibitors is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the 4-H Show Arena, and poultry judging will take place at noon.
Fireworks Celebrations Planned for Independence Day
Independence Day is approaching and a number of communities in the area are planning to commemorate the holiday with fireworks and other celebrations. State law also lengthens the amount of time allowed for citizens to discharge fireworks; as opposed to only allowing fireworks until 11 p.m., fireworks may be discharged until midnight on July 4. In Knox, Plymouth and Winamac, fireworks can be discharged between 10 a.m. and midnight, while many other communities adhere to state law.
Pulaski County Fair Underway This Weekend
The Pulaski County Fair kicks off this weekend with a number of exciting events planned throughout the week until the fair ends on Friday, July 5. Unfortunately, due to the large amounts of flooding that have occurred recently, the Truck and Tractor Pull event has been postponed until late summer or early fall. On top of that, the 4-H Horse and Pony Show planned for Sunday has been moved off the grounds and officials have postponed the contesting planned for Wednesday.
Despite that, there are a number of fun events planned for the next several days. Judging of 4-H projects will take place Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by the 4-H Dog Show at 9 a.m. The 2013 4-H Royalty will also be crowned on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Eastern Pulaski School Board Moves Forward With Superintendent Search
The Eastern Pulaski School Board met in executive session Wednesday night when they discussed the candidates for superintendent and future meetings.
The board members voted to hold two meetings next week to discuss a proposed contract for a new superintendent. The board will be holding negotiations soon.
Pulaski County’s German Fest Set for Aug. 10
Details on Pulaski County’s German Fest have been released.
The Aug. 10 event in downtown Winamac will feature a live DJ from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and live music by the Jay Fox Bavarian Showtime Band from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET. Food will be offered beginning at 3 p.m. including brats, potato salad and corn on the cob with pre-sale tickets available at various Winamac businesses.
Pulaski County Fair Still Set For Fairgrounds in Spite of Rain
The Pulaski County Fair is set to go on as scheduled at the fairgrounds at the back of the Winamac Town Park. Natalie Federer with Purdue Extension Pulaski County says they’re keeping an eye on the Tippecanoe as areas upriver got significant amounts of rainfall yesterday. All of the projects are in place and will be moved to safety if water levels start to rise. The fair starts this weekend, and Federer says fairgoers should be cautious about parking so they don’t get stuck in the mud. Also as a precaution no livestock trailers will be left at the fairgrounds. Tomorrow night’s tractor pull has been postponed and will be rescheduled sometime this fall. Purdue Extension and fair board officials are working closely with the town of Winamac to ensure everyone’s safety, but as of right now everything else will go on at the fairgrounds as scheduled.
Medaryville Town Council to Discuss Mowing Ordinance Compliance Tonight
The town of Medaryville’s mowing ordinance is once again up for discussion as the town council will meet tonight to discuss a resident’s compliance issues. Resident Brian Capouch previously claimed that the town failed to inform him specifically of what his violations were and also asserted that the town’s ordinance was defective and in violation of state code.
Pulaski County Pageant Sign-up Deadline Approaching
The deadline to sign up as a contestant in this year’s Little Miss and Mister Pulaski County Pageant is quickly approaching. Friday is the last day registrations will be accepted, and entry forms can be picked up at Hickory Creek at Winamac until the day they are due. Contestants must be at least 5 years old by the July 1 and no older than 8 years old, and must be a resident or semi-resident of Pulaski County.
BraunAbility Introduces Wheelchair Accessible SUV
The company that pioneered the wheelchair-accessible minivan is rolling out a new product. BraunAbility officials unveiled their newest vehicle – a mobility SUV – during an event in Clearwater, Fla. The Winamac-based company partnered with West Coast Customs on the design of the tricked-out Ford Explorer. It is designed to be an improved option to the standard wheelchair accessible mini-van. Tippecanoe River State Park Preparing for Christmas in July
The Tippecanoe River State Park is gearing up for their annual Christmas in July event, with events planned for the whole weekend. On Friday, the park will celebrate the “Night Before Christmas” at the family campground center fire ring from 7 to 8 p.m. ET with s’mores and a campfire.
Kewanna Man Arrested After Alleged Theft
A Kewanna man was arrested Saturday after allegedly stealing a moped from a home in Winamac.
Winamac Police Chief Michael Buchanan said that a resident at 454 N. Market St. reportedly saw a man push his moped off of his property. The victim called police and when Buchanan learned of the details he went looking for the suspect and couldn’t locate him.
Two Injured in Accident South of Winamac
A 42-year-old Monticello man and a juvenile were injured Tuesday, June 18 late in the evening after a car vs. motorcycle accident on U.S. 35 south of Winamac near County Road 225 South.
Stanley Dunkler of Knox told Pulaski County deputies that he was driving on U.S. 35 when he entered into the other lane and collided with a motorcycle driven by Tyrone Anderson of Monticello.
Medaryville Man Arrested on Burglary, Theft Charges
A Medaryville man was arrested Wednesday, June 19 on charges that stem from a burglary incident in October of 2012.
Joshua Shepherd, 25, was arrested on preliminary charges of Burglary, a Class C felony and Theft, a Class D felony.
Winamac Man Killed in Missouri Motorcycle Crash
A Winamac man was killed in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash Sunday morning on an interstate in southeast Missouri. Michael Blinn, 50, was northbound on Interstate 55 in Portageville on a 2004 Harley-Davidson, ran off the left side of the roadway and was thrown from the bike, according to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol. He was wearing a helmet. The wreck happened at 8:30 a.m., and he was pronounced dead a short time later by the New Madrid County Coroner. Blinn sold tractors at Gilsinger Implements in Winamac and wrote a weekly newspaper column for The Pulaski County Journal. He also starred in the locally-produced movie And Then You Die. Arrangements are pending at Frain Mortuary in Winamac.
PCEDF to Host Economic Development Summit Thursday
The third annual Pulaski County Economic Development Summit is approaching. Nathan Origer, executive director of the Pulaski County Community Development Commission, told WKVI that the event to be held on Thursday, June 27 at the Monterey Town Hall will include a catered dinner and guest speakers.
Origer will give a “State of the County Economy” report, but he said that his talk won’t be very long. He said three other guest speakers will be featured at the event, focusing more on the tourism aspects of the county.
