Memorial Service at Pulaski County Justice Center Today

 
 

A memorial service is planned today at the Pulaski County Justice Center for the Pulaski County officers who died in the line of duty.

Pulaski County Sheriff Michael Gayer and the entire staff will be in front of the Justice Center where the three officers will be memorialized. Sheriff Charles Henry Oglesby was shot and killed on Oct. 5, 1907; Sheriff Milo “Mike” Lewis was shot and killed on Oct. 11, 1967 and Deputy Sheriff Shadron Kiley “Shad” Bassett was killed in an automobile crash while responding to a call on Oct. 7, 2005.

Everyone is invited to the service which is scheduled at noon ET. A dinner for the families of the honored officers will be provided.

Help the Erie Trail During National Trails Day

  
 
The first Saturday in June is National Trails Day, and what better way to celebrate the holiday than on the Erie Trail with the Prairie Trails Club? On June 1, join the club for a day of trail maintenance, a bike ride, geocaching, food, fun and entertainment as they hold a fundraiser and membership drive to support the construction and maintenance of the North Judson/Monterey Erie Trail.

Paul Byer of the Prairie Trails Club said the effort is being held to try to rustle up more club members to help maintain and care for the trail.

Keep Memorial Day Closures in Mind Monday

 
 
Many offices and facilities are closed Monday, May 27, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. City offices are closed, including those in Knox, Hamlet, North Judson, Winamac, Plymouth and Culver. County, state and federal offices are closed, including post offices, courthouses and banks.

Schools across the Kankakee Valley will also be closed, including Knox Community Schools, North Judson-San Pierre Community Schools, Culver Community Schools, Eastern Pulaski Community Schools and West Central Community Schools.

The purchase of automated external defibrillators for Pulaski County is still on hold until Sherry Fagner from the Pulaski County Health Department can determine whether or not a grant for the AEDs is available from the state. EMS Director Nikki Lowry gave her monthly report to the commissioners this week and explained that the grant would possibly cover the cost of up to seven defibrillators, and she needs to know which county buildings would most need the life-saving devices.

New Stone to Be Dedicated at Winamac Pocket Park

 
 
In a combined effort, the American Legion and VFW in Winamac will be dedicating a new stone at the base of the flagpole in the pocket park. VFW Commander Greg “Hank” Henry said the VFW will be holding their annual Memorial Day services at 11 a.m. at the courthouse; immediately following that, he said the VFW and American Legion will travel to the new pocket park in Winamac to dedicate a new stone at 11:30 a.m.

District 2 Task Force Tests HVAC Equipment

 
 

A few members of the District 2 Task Force were in the Winamac Town Park Wednesday morning to do some testing of HVAC equipment. Sherry Fagner from the Pulaski County Health Department explains that they were trying to remedy the air system.

“We are testing some new HVAC systems and some duct work with the systems we currently have. We try to be prepared when something happens and this is part of our plans to get them to where we want them in the field. Can we go right now? Absolutely. But, we want to make sure the systems we have are the best they can be,” explained Fagner.

RB Walters from DeGroot Technology told the Pulaski County Commissioners this week that the 911 system project is going to be a bit more expensive than they had anticipated. Walters said he has received a number of change notices from CenturyLink which stated that they were making changes to their quote.

Town of Winamac Begins 50/50 Sidewalk Program

The Winamac Town Board this week discussed the 50/50 sidewalk program which has recently kicked off with a budget of $10,000. However, some people have already put in new sidewalks and have asked the town that they be reimbursed, and board member Richard Denney suggested to look into the possibility of reimbursing those residents after all applications have been received. If there is money left over, he would like to see the people reimbursed.

State Representative Douglas Gutwein visited Pulaski County this week to speak to the county commissioners and council during a joint session held Monday night regarding a revenue bill vetoed by Governor Mike Pence that could affect the county’s CAGIT moneys. Gutwein explained that a clerical error at the state level could force the county to pay taxpayers back millions of dollars that had been collected by the County Adjusted Gross Income Tax – money that had originally been collected to cover the cost of the jail – because the state claims that the county overcharged its taxpayers. The county still owes roughly $5 million on the jail facility.

Indiana’s First Lady Visits Eastern Pulaski Elementary School

 
 

The Eastern Pulaski Elementary School welcomed a special guest Tuesday morning. Indiana’s First Lady, Karen Pence, visited the school which recently received the honor of being named a Four Star School.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman and Elementary Principal Jill Collins escorted Pence around the elementary school where she visited with a handful of teachers. Pence, who has taught for many years, stopped to talk to a couple of classes and took questions from the students.

The Winamac Town Board last week tabled discussion regarding the new employee handbook and addressed a number of issues brought forward by Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger during their regular meeting on May 13.

Berger asked the council to consider requiring that property owners be responsible for any unpaid water and electric bills after a renter moves out, leaving the town with an outstanding bill. Following a discussion, the council voted to raise the water and electric deposits as a solution to the matter and an ordinance will need to be written for these changes to take effect.

The Pulaski County Commissioners and Building Inspector Dave Dare held a discussion regarding an unsafe building at 533 N. Monticello St. in Winamac that Dare said is in very bad shape and needs to be addressed. He said the order to repair or demolish the building went out on April 24 and he received confirmation of its delivery via certified mail on April 26.

Visitation is Thursday, May 23 from 3-8 p.m. EDT at the Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville and Friday, May 24 one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Eastern Pulaski School Board Approves Summer School Classes

The Eastern Pulaski School Board approved summer school programs at their recent meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman stated that one class will be P.E. for high school students.

“They can have that credit completed during the summer in a fashion where they have three and four hour blocked time,” explained Klitzman. “With just a little imagination and creativity, you can see how much more things that opens up and that you can do with that block of time.”

Memorial Day Events Planned for May 27

 
 
Memorial Day is just seven days away and a number of area VFWs and American Legions are preparing for ceremonies and other events to commemorate the holiday dedicating to remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

In Starke County, the Knox VFW will be holding their parade march on Memorial Day, May 27, at 9 a.m. beginning at the county courthouse where a short ceremony will be held. Following that, the group will march to Oak Hill Cemetery where they will hold another short ceremony to reflect on the fallen soldiers who fought to uphold our way of life.

Two Arrested after Traffic Stop in Pulaski County

One adult and one juvenile were taken into custody after Pulaski County police allegedly found drugs in a car after a traffic stop Friday morning.

A Pulaski County deputy was patrolling on U.S. 421 when he saw a vehicle operating without a working passenger side headlight or a license plate light. The officer pulled over the vehicle just south of Medaryville and found a 17-year-old male operating the vehicle. As the driver was attempting to locate the requested license and registration, the officer reportedly saw a marijuana cigarette in the vehicle.

Local McDonald’s Offering Free Meal to Armed Forces Members

  
 
McDonald’s restaurants in eight Indiana counties and two counties in Michigan will be offering a free Extra Value Meal to active-duty and former military personnel today in honor of Armed Forces Day. The free meal will be offered from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. to any man or woman who is currently serving or has served in any branch of the military.

To receive a meal, the service member must be in uniform or present a military ID. A representative with McDonald’s stated that this is just a small way for McDonald’s to say “thank you” to the men and women who serve our country.

The offer is valid at participating McDonald’s restaurants in Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Marshall, Pulaski, Starke, and St. Joseph counties in Indiana, as well as Cass and Berrien counties in Michigan.

Pulaski County Economic Development Explores Industrial Park Options

Pulaski County Economic Development Preliminary work is underway to develop an industrial park between Medaryville and Francesville in Pulaski County in order to take advantage of the area’s rail access. Economic Development Director Nathan P. Origer says the goal as stated in the 2010 “Pulaski County: Mapping a Path Forward” report is to draw agriculture and technology businesses to the area.

“Ultimately it’ll be an industrial park, but one that we hope will attract tenants, primarily in some way related to agriculture or otherwise complementary to existing business in the county, the county’s major sectors,” said Origer.
