Pulaski County Fair Shuffles Weekend Event Locations
A few popular events at the Pulaski County Fair will take place in alternate locations this weekend in order to get the fairgrounds ready for next weekend’s influx of visitors. Water is finally receding at the Winamac Town Park, where events will take place Monday through Thursday.
All pre-judging was done offsite, and exhibits will be brought to the fairgrounds on Sunday. Meanwhile, open class entries will be accepted at the Pulaski County Highway Garage on U.S. 35 just north of Winamac from 5 until 7 p.m. today and from 8:30 until 11 tomorrow morning. IDHS Offers Fireworks Safety Tips
The Indiana Department of Homeland has developed a few tips to ensure safety during Independence Day celebrations.
IDHS says fireworks can be purchased by persons 18 years of age or older. To ensure safety, however, it’s considered best to buy the items at licensed dealer locations. State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson says despite safety precautions, structure fires can certainly be started by their misuse.

The time estimates are based on information gathered from road sensors that measure a variety of factors, including average vehicle speed and traffic volumes. Pulaski County Home Destroyed by Fire Thursday Morning
A mobile home was heavily damaged following a Thursday morning fire in Pulaski County.
The Winamac Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call around 5:22 a.m. in the area of 3200 North and 300 West in Ripley. Once on scene, firefighters noticed the south end of the mobile home was engulfed.

Majority of Pulaski County Fair Activities to Continue at Fairgrounds
The Pulaski County Fair will go on as scheduled next week at the fairgrounds in Winamac. They are located at the back of the town park, which is still closed due to Tippecanoe River flooding. Purdue Extension Pulaski County Director Natalie Federer says a few schedule revisions were made to accommodate weekend activities. Saturday’s achievement program and fashion revue have been moved to the Winamac Nazarene Church. The town park is due to reopen at 2 p.m. on Sunday, so animals will be brought in that afternoon in groups staggered by species.
Winamac Fireworks Moved From Town Park to School
Residents of Winamac will be traveling to a new location to view this year’s fireworks show.
The July 4th celebration is organized through matched donations and typically hosted in the Winamac Town Park. Due to flooding that is affecting the grounds, the fireworks show will now be held at the school in Winamac on the practice fields.

Recent River Flooding Affects Local Businesses
With the recent abundance of rainy weather a couple local businesses that offer summer services are suffering. Winamac businesses Tippe-Canoe Rentals as well as Riverside Rentals haven’t been able to let anyone out on the rivers for weeks due to the high levels. Little to be Done in Winamac Town Park Flooding
Flooding along the Tippecanoe River has left the ground saturated in the Winamac Town Park.
According to Town Manager Brad Zellers, however, there’s not much the Town can do to help with the situation. As things stand, water from the river is coming into the back of the park.

New Laws Effective Wednesday
Legislation that allows Indiana residents to legally own a sawed-off shotgun takes effect, today.
Senate Bill 433 is one of several changes to Indiana law made by the General Assembly earlier this year. The bill repeals a prohibition on owning a sawed-off shotgun so long as the weapon is developed by a licensed manufacturer.
Society of Innovators Still Seeking Nominees
The Society of Innovators at Ivy Tech Community College is looking for northwest Indiana residents who are finding new solutions to old problems. Nominations are being accepted through Monday for innovators in the seven-county northwest Indiana region. Past honorees include BraunAbility founder Ralph Braun and the North Judson-based Kemin-Lambert Spearmint Team. Society of Innovators Managing Director John Davies says innovation is universal.

Millions in Crop Value Lost to Indiana Flooding
Extension educators from around the state gathered in Indianapolis late last week to learn about the damage recent rains are causing to area fields.
It’s estimated that Indiana’s crops have lost $300-million in value due to the amount of rainfall in certain portions of the state. Northern sections of Indiana have been impacted more heavily than other areas.

For Local Clerks, SCOTUS Marriage Decision Changes Little
Same-sex couples can now marry nationwide, but marriage license applications in Starke, Pulaski, and Marshall County will remain unchanged.
The Supreme Court declared in a 5-4 decision on Friday that same-sex couples have a right under the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution to wed. According to the syllabus from the majority opinion, same-sex couples must now have their marriages from neighboring state governments recognized by the state in which they currently reside.
PTSD Triggers Present During Independence Day Celebrations
Fireworks detonated during holiday celebrations can have an effect on individuals afflicted with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, according to one Clinically Licensed Social Worker.

Fireworks Season Gets Under Way
Independence Day is Saturday, but many Hoosiers are getting an early start on their celebrations. Consumer fireworks can legally be discharged June 29 – July 3 from 9 a.m. until two hours after sunset. That cutoff time is extended to midnight on the 4th. From July 5 – 9 they can again be set off until two hours after sunset. Local ordinances may be more restrictive, so check before lighting the fuse. Continue reading
