The Pulaski County Commissioners accepted the letter of resignation of their Emergency Management Agency Director.
Larry Hoover told the Commissioners last night that he would leave his position effective August 1st. Allowing for several weeks to make the transition also will allow Hoover time to prepare certain grant applications for the county.

During the coming months, summer temperatures are expected to soar. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration likes to annually remind care-givers of small children to never leave a child unattended in a vehicle. They report that on a 60 degree day temperatures inside a locked car can get well above 100 degrees very quickly. On hotter days that get up into the 80s and 90s outside, temperatures in a car can be a dangerous 130 to 160 degrees within minutes. These conditions are obviously incredibly dangerous to young children who can potentially die when their bodies temperatures exceed 107 degrees. Heatstroke does not always lead to death but can also cause various other health problems such as permanent brain damage, deafness and the loss of sight. Continue reading
When you consider the phrase “killer creatures” your mind most likely automatically turns to those creepy crawlers and vicious attackers of the animal kingdom such as snakes, sharks and other wild animals. You may be shocked to discover that the world’s deadliest creature is actually an insect. But if you still happen to see any of such wild animals around your area that may endanger your loved ones, services like snake removal can swoop in to the rescue.
Mosquitoes kill more people world wild than sharks, wolves, lions, elephants, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, dogs, tape and round worms, freshwater snails, assassin bugs, Tsetse flies, snakes and humans combined! After adding together the reported number of fatalities from the animals listed above it came out to 586,220 deaths which is still 138,780 less than the astonishing 725,000 deaths from mosquitoes on a yearly basis. The Indiana Department of Transportation is hosting a drive this week and it surprisingly has nothing to do with cars. This particular event is the result of the INDOT Northwest Disrict teaming up with the American Red Cross for their 10th annual blood drive. A few popular events at the Pulaski County Fair will take place in alternate locations this weekend in order to get the fairgrounds ready for next weekend’s influx of visitors. Water is finally receding at the Winamac Town Park, where events will take place Monday through Thursday.
All pre-judging was done offsite, and exhibits will be brought to the fairgrounds on Sunday. Meanwhile, open class entries will be accepted at the Pulaski County Highway Garage on U.S. 35 just north of Winamac from 5 until 7 p.m. today and from 8:30 until 11 tomorrow morning. The Indiana Department of Homeland has developed a few tips to ensure safety during Independence Day celebrations.
IDHS says fireworks can be purchased by persons 18 years of age or older. To ensure safety, however, it’s considered best to buy the items at licensed dealer locations. State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson says despite safety precautions, structure fires can certainly be started by their misuse.

The Indiana Department of Transportation has added travel times to seven dynamic roadside signs around the state just in time for the holiday weekend. The time estimates are based on information gathered from road sensors that measure a variety of factors, including average vehicle speed and traffic volumes. INDOT has developed algorithms to ensure the travel time information displayed is as accurate as possible. Continue reading
A mobile home was heavily damaged following a Thursday morning fire in Pulaski County.
The Winamac Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call around 5:22 a.m. in the area of 3200 North and 300 West in Ripley. Once on scene, firefighters noticed the south end of the mobile home was engulfed.

The Pulaski County Fair will go on as scheduled next week at the fairgrounds in Winamac. They are located at the back of the town park, which is still closed due to Tippecanoe River flooding. Purdue Extension Pulaski County Director Natalie Federer says a few schedule revisions were made to accommodate weekend activities. Saturday’s achievement program and fashion revue have been moved to the Winamac Nazarene Church. The town park is due to reopen at 2 p.m. on Sunday, so animals will be brought in that afternoon in groups staggered by species.
Residents of Winamac will be traveling to a new location to view this year’s fireworks show.
The July 4th celebration is organized through matched donations and typically hosted in the Winamac Town Park. Due to flooding that is affecting the grounds, the fireworks show will now be held at the school in Winamac on the practice fields.

With the recent abundance of rainy weather a couple local businesses that offer summer services are suffering. Winamac businesses Tippe-Canoe Rentals as well as Riverside Rentals haven’t been able to let anyone out on the rivers for weeks due to the high levels. Conditions have just been too dangerous to allow patrons to rent canoes and kayaks. Continue reading

Flooding along the Tippecanoe River has left the ground saturated in the Winamac Town Park.
According to Town Manager Brad Zellers, however, there’s not much the Town can do to help with the situation. As things stand, water from the river is coming into the back of the park.

Legislation that allows Indiana residents to legally own a sawed-off shotgun takes effect, today.
Senate Bill 433 is one of several changes to Indiana law made by the General Assembly earlier this year. The bill repeals a prohibition on owning a sawed-off shotgun so long as the weapon is developed by a licensed manufacturer.
The Society of Innovators at Ivy Tech Community College is looking for northwest Indiana residents who are finding new solutions to old problems. Nominations are being accepted through Monday for innovators in the seven-county northwest Indiana region. Past honorees include BraunAbility founder Ralph Braun and the North Judson-based Kemin-Lambert Spearmint Team. Society of Innovators Managing Director John Davies says innovation is universal.
