There is asbestos is the rubble of a building in downtown Monterey that collapsed last month. Pulaski County Building Inspector Dave Dare shared that information with the town council during a special-called meeting last night. A contractor he hired to check the site at the southeast corner of Main and Walnut Streets found two square feet of asbestos in the duct wrap in the basement. Pulaski County Government to Receive LOHUT Information
The joint governing bodies in Pulaski County will be receiving information from a representative from the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) from Purdue University about a Local Option Highway User Tax or LOHUT. A LOHUT includes a vehicle excise tax and a wheel tax. It is included in the vehicle registration payment at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
West Central School Corporation to Offer Free Meals this Summer
The West Central School Corporation will participate in the summer feeding program.
Students aged 18 and younger can eat free breakfast and lunch at the West Central Elementary School Cafeteria from June 2 until June 11. Adults and staff members can eat breakfast or lunch for $1.00.
Breakfast will be served from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and lunch is available from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. ET during the dates listed.
Entrance Fees to Increase at Indiana State Parks and Forests
It will cost you a little bit more to enter an Indiana state park or state forest this season.
Operating costs have increased which has caused the increase in gate fees. The entrance to most state parks and three state forest recreation areas will increase from $5.00 per in-state vehicle to $7.00. Many activities offered are free after paying the gate fee.
Monterey Council to Discuss Fate of Collapsed Building Tonight
The Monterey Town Council will decide tonight how to proceed with the cleanup of the former Sportsman’s Bar and Grill. The vacant building collapsed on Thursday, April 23rd. Nobody was injured. The area around the structure at the southeast corner of Walnut and Main Streets in downtown Monterey is blocked off. Pulaski County Building Inspector Dave Dare hired a Valparaiso-based contractor to inspect the rubble for asbestos. If any is found, special precautions will need to be followed to clean the site up. Appraisers to Look at Pleasant View Rest Home for Potential Sale
An appraisal of the Pleasant View Rest Home in Winamac will be conducted for a potential real estate sale.
Two appraisals will be sought from local licensed appraisers to complete the task. Pulaski County Commissioner Terry Young will be contacting the contractors to set up the procedure.
The commissioners also agreed to hold an auction to get rid of the contents inside the county home. It was also suggested that other unwanted items from county departments be included in the auction. An auction date has not been finalized.

A pair of Winamac-based businesses have formed a partnership. Link Environmental Equipment sells and services equipment for the waste and recycling industries. Pulaski County Government Analyzes Courthouse Issues
The courthouse in Pulaski County is in need of extensive repairs.
Maintenance Director Jeff Johnston presented the Pulaski County Commissioners and the Pulaski County Council members with a long list of exterior and interior issues that need to be addressed soon. Johnston covered structural needs including cleaning limestone, realigning dislocated stone, replacing deteriorated stone, repairing defective concrete,
carpet cleaning and repairing and sealing the north side basement entry. The uneven sidewalks also pose as tripping hazards around the courthouse. The cracks found in the cement stairs and walls around the courthouse can gather water that causes damage during the winter with the action of freezing and thawing.
Pulaski County Commissioners Hire New Highway Superintendent
A new superintendent has been hired at the Pulaski County Highway Department.
The commissioners last night approved the hire of Terry Ruff as the highway superintendent by a 2-1 vote with Bud Krohn, Jr. and Terry Young voting for the position. Larry Brady had the dissenting vote.
Ordinance Prepared to Reduce Speed Limit on Pulaski County Road
A speed limit change on a county road in Pulaski County will be enacted once an ordinance takes effect.
The Pulaski County Commissioners recently approved the preparation of an ordinance that reduces the speed on County Road East 50 South between the junction of south old State Road 14 and 200 South. The speed limit will be 30 mph on that stretch of road. Several residents have complained to the commissioners of reckless driving on that road for some time.
Courthouse Repairs to be Detailed in Pulaski County Commissioners Special Meeting
The Pulaski County Commissioners will meet in special session today to discuss repairs needed at the courthouse.
Maintenance Director Jeff Johnston told the commissioners in April that he has an extensive presentation to detail renovations and upgrades at the courthouse. He said issues remain that can no longer be ignored and plans need to be put into place now to make these repairs. Structural concerns and infrastructure needs are part of Johnston’s focus.
Pulaski County Continues HCI Project with Community Forum
Pulaski County had a strong showing for collecting surveys, but now additional information needs to be gathered.
As part of its Hometown Collaborative Initiative, Pulaski County’s oversight committee will be hosting a community forum. The forum will allow community members to better explain their answers on the survey, as well as find out more about what other residents prioritize.

DNR Redesigns, Launches Mobile “App”
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources may be providing easier access to information.
A mobile “app” that the DNR oversees for mobile devices has been redesigned for both Apple and Android operating systems. The remake comes after the previous “app” was launched in 2011. According to the DNR, the previous application was downloaded almost 33-thousand times.
Annexation Bill Receives Approval, Culver Affected
Legislation approved at the statehouse on Wednesday will be reforming how land is annexed in the Hoosier State.
The Indiana Farm Bureau – which has been involved for the past three legislative sessions in reform efforts – believes municipalities have absorbed thousands of acres of farmland in recent years.

Pulaski County BZA Approves Variance Request
The Pulaski County Board of Zoning Appeals considered a variance request Monday night filed by representatives from Wallace Pork Systems.
The petitioner requested a variance of 20,070 square feet for a storage building at 7567 W. 950 S. in Winamac. The existing feed mill business will use the expanded space to house equipment, tools and other items, according to Pulaski County Commissioner Terry Young.
The seven-member board approved the variance request unanimously.
Engineers to Check for Asbestos in Rubble from Collapsed Building
Pulaski County Building Administrator David Dare has been in contact with an engineering company for the purpose of requirements to check for the presence of asbestos in the debris from a building collapse last week.
Dare explained that it’s required by law to check commercial buildings for the presence of asbestos prior to demolition. Since the structure fell on its own, the requirement still stands. Expert services by a commercial asbestos removal company will be necessary in these situations.
