Pulaski County Department Heads, Employees to Partake in Training

Personnel policy handbook training sessions for department heads and employees in Pulaski County are scheduled for this month.

County Attorney Kevin Tankersley explained to the commissioners last week that a revision is complete which provides more detail and required forms. Workers compensation, Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) information, overtime, and more is included in the 98-page document. Tankersley said the new manual is more user-friendly. A policy has been in place in Pulaski County since 2012.

Pulaski County Public Library Celebrates National Library Week

The Pulaski County Public Library is celebrating National Library Week with a program on Thursday.

Library officials are hosting a maker session of Springtime Green Cleaners and Cocktails for adults at 5:30 p.m. ET at the library in Winamac. Participants can learn how to freshen homes with nature’s best ingredients. Along with the cleaning aspect, adults will also learn how to prepare herb-infused drinks.

National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association. It is a time to highlight the role of libraries in communities including the work put forth by librarians and workers. The recognition continues through Saturday, April 18.

Itemizing Pays If You Qualify

Federal and state income taxes are due Wednesday. Michelle Bachtel from H&R Block in Knox says taxpayers can either take the standard deduction or itemize, depending on which will be most advantageous for their personal situation.

For individuals who are filing single or married filing separate, the standard deduction is $6,200. For a married filing joint couple or a qualifying widower with a dependent child, that amount is doubled to $12,400. And for a person filing head of household the amount is $9,100.

Medaryville Home Sustains Damage in Fire

The Medaryville Fire Department fought a brush and house fire this afternoon.

Medaryville Fire Chief Shaun Hauptli told WKVI News that the fire started as a neighbor was burning brush at 14715 W. 450 N. in Medaryville. The pile was left unattended. The wind picked up and spread the fire to the home of Charlotte Stoner. The home sustained water and smoke damage along with structure damage to the second story, mainly contained to the roof.

Pulaski County Sheriff Requests Vehicle Purchase

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department will be getting a new vehicle.

Sheriff Jeff Richwine approached the commissioners this week to seek approval to purchase a Chevrolet Tahoe. He said an SUV would better suit the department.

“In a rural area like this, I think a four wheel drive would be great,” said Richwine. With the last two winters we’ve had, it would be a plus for the officers to be able to stay in their own police car rather than get into one of the Humvees or some of the other vehicles that we have.”

Confined Feeding Operation Coming to Pulaski County

A new confined hog feeding operation will be locating in Pulaski County.

David Weber from the Pulaski County Building and Zoning Department told the commissioners this week that a public hearing was held by the planning commission in March to hear comments concerning a rezoning request. The planning commission recommended the rezoning of an 80 acre area at 11189 W. 750 N. in Cass Township from A-1 to A-2, which includes exclusive or intense agricultural purposes. The representatives of Livestock Engineering Solutions want to establish a confined feeding operation at that location. Two barns will be constructed to contain 7,000 hogs.

Strong Winds Could Plague Area Today

There is a potential for severe weather in the area today. Marshall County Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery says it depends on how several meteorological aspects set up today.

Avery says strong winds will most likely plague the area with a risk of tornadoes. Strong winds may break off tree limbs and create traffic hazards.

Now that operations have ceased at the Pleasant View Rest Home in Winamac, officials are working to keep the building secure.

Maintenance Director Jeff Johnston told the commissioners that slide bolts with padlocks have been installed to tighten up security. Johnston asked about itemized inventory, and Commissioner Terry Young commented that a partial list has been drafted. The commissioners, Johnston, and the remaining workers at the Pleasant View Rest Home will make a list and decide what to do with those items. The commissioners talked about holding an auction to get rid of the equipment that will not be utilized by other county offices.

Open Auditions in May for Maxinkuckee Players Summer Production

Hello DollyThe Maxinkuckee Players will hold open auditions for this year’s summer production on Saturday, May 2.

Those interested in a part in Hello Dolly will read from a script prepared on site and sing a song of choice. A pianist and a CD player will be available for accompaniment.

The musical surrounds the antics of Dolly Levi as she decides that she needs to find someone for herself after years of finding matches for everyone else. The musical is set in the City of New York at the turn of the century and provides some famous musical hits such as “Before the Parade Passes By,” “It Only Takes a Moment,” “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” and the title number, “Hello, Dolly!”.

Tax Preparer Offers Tips for Choosing Federal Form

Income taxes are due in six days. There’s still plenty of time to file if you haven’t already done so. Michelle Bachtel with the Knox H&R Block office says it’s important to choose the federal form that best meets your needs. A popular option is the 1040-EZ. However, it has limits.

“As long as you are under the age of 65, your income is below $100,000 and the income only comes from things like wages, salaries, tips and unemployment, with less than $1,500 in interest, you can use this form. But you cannot itemize deductions, claim dependents or be filing separate from your spouse. With this form your credits are limited, so just because you are eligible to file this form doesn’t mean you should, Bachtel said. Continue reading →

Pulaski County Election Board to Research E-Poll Book Purchase

The Pulaski County Election Board will be looking into the feasibility of purchasing e-poll books after meeting with the Pulaski County Commissioners Monday night.

Board member Jon Frain explained that the implementation of e-poll books is the next step in upgrading the election equipment. The county would purchase iPads with election software. Voting officials would be able to scan a voter’s Driver’s License into the computer, and that would create a digital signature page to move the process at a quicker pace.

West Central Students Collect Change in Pennies for Patients Campaign

west central logoStudents participating in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes program at the West Central School Corporation were successful in collecting funds for the Pennies for Patients initiative.

The goal was set at $2,500, but Superintendent Don Street told WKVI News that the goal was surpassed. The students collected over $3,000 to benefit patients who are part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Any loose change was donated by students in the high school, middle school, and elementary school.

Pulaski County Commissioners Anticipate Highway Superintendent Resignation

The Pulaski County Commissioners will be interviewing candidates for the top position at the county highway department.

The commissioners approved action to interview internally for the position of superintendent, however, a letter of resignation from acting Superintendent Mark Fox has not been filed with the county. They anticipate that letter to be filed this week. If the commissioners feel that a person currently working for the county does not fit what they’re looking for in a candidate, they will advertise externally for the position.

West Central School Board Reviews E-Learning Survey Results

Students at the West Central School Corporation participated in their first e-learning day of instruction on Saturday, March 14. The school board reviewed returned surveys last week following the experience.

Superintendent Don Street said that the responses were favorable for this type of method in making up missed days of instruction.

“Out of the parents that responded to the survey, 87.4 percent found that the e-learning day was effective,” explained Street. “From the students that responded to the survey, 65.6 percent found e-learning to be effective. Forty-nine of our staff members responded with 85.7 percent stating that our students made the expectations for the day.”

Don’t Forget Any Income When Filing Your Taxes

Federal and state income taxes are due in eight days. Michelle Bachtel from H&R Block in Knox says it’s important not to exclude any sources of income.

“Pretty much all income, whether it’s reported or not reported, is taxable unless the law specifically excludes it,” Bachtel said. “This includes non-cash income from things like bartering or exchanging of assets. Winamac Woman Wanted on Warrant Arrested for New Meth Charges

A vehicle stopped in Pulaski County has led to the arrest of a Winamac woman on multiple charges.

Sheriff’s Deputies were in the area of State Road 39 and County Road 100 North in Pulaski County, Saturday evening. Officers spotted the passenger of a vehicle they claim was wanted on two warrants. Those charges allege possession of methamphetamine and failure to appear.

Federal and state income taxes are due April 15. Michelle Bachtel with the H&R Block office in Knox says anyone whose income exceeds the filing threshold set by the IRS needs to file a tax return. Thresholds are based on your age and filing status, which is either single, married filing joint, married filing separate, head of household or qualifying widower.
