A committee will look into wages and salaries in the coming weeks in Pulaski County.
EMS Director Nikki Lowry begged the Pulaski County Council for help as she cannot keep staff in her department. She said she is in desperate need for paramedics, but the county’s wages and benefits don’t entice potential applicants to work with the county. According to Lowry, first-year staff members don’t get any extra time off.
The Town of Winamac will soon be able to provide some better services for its residents.
A new Town website is anticipated to launch this week. The websites’ development was started in October of 2014. The company developing the site has spent the last several months gathering information from the Town to better supply residents with proper information.

The Town of Winamac was recently clued into an alleged attempt to commit a fraudulent transaction by a piece of returned mail.
During last night’s Winamac Town Council meeting, it was learned that the Town received mail containing a check that was considered undeliverable to the eastern portion of the U.S. The Town’s return address was used in the fraudulent check.

The Pulaski County Council last night did not act on the change in personnel at the county highway department.
Council President Jay Sullivan looked over the paperwork and commented that the personnel change did not include a change in the money budgeted for the two positions. He believed that the only reason the council would need to act was if there was an additional appropriation or transfer because salaries would change. Two employees changed job descriptions.
The commissioners voted in January to appoint a person as general foreman. That is the usual action of the highway superintendent. Terry Ruff was placed into that position while Travis Holiday was dropped to a foreman position.
The enrollment deadline for the Healthcare Marketplace is coming up, and IU Health says they continue to provide resources for individuals.
The deadline for enrollment is February 15th. There are dozens of plans available to Hoosiers on the marketplace.

The Pulaski County Commissioners and the Pulaski County Council will meet in joint session tonight.
One item the joint board is expected to discuss is the change in the salary ordinance in the highway department. When the commissioners met on Jan. 19, the members voted 2-1 to appoint a person in the position that is second in command at the department. The highway superintendent normally makes that appointment, but Commissioner Bud Krohn, Jr., who spearheaded the move, called it a political change. He presented the change for a vote. Terry Young also voted in favor of the change while Commission President Larry Brady was the dissenting vote.
The Winamac Town Council will meet tonight for their regularly scheduled meeting.

Eastern Pulaski Schools are expected to take some action regarding their building project.
The School Corporation has been working for some time to update schools for improved safety upgrading restrooms, and replacing floors in the gyms. The project is estimated to cost about $14-million. Architectural plans were largely finalized in January. Continue reading
West Central School Corporation students could make up school days missed if the Department of Education approves the corporation’s application to incorporate e-learning days into the school calendar.
Superintendent Don Street said students have missed four days of school due to snow so far this semester.
“We have to built-in snow days so we will go to school on February 16 and April 20 to make up two days. Currently, we have two days that are still outstanding,” said Street.
The West Central School Board members discussed the wind turbine maintenance agreement during this week’s meeting.
Superintendent Don Street said they looked at maintenance agreements from other schools and decided on a provider.

A not guilty plea was entered for Stanley Myers, 70, in an initial hearing in Pulaski County Circuit Court. He is charged with six counts of child molesting.
According to court documents, the Monterey man is accused of child molesting on six different occasions with six-year-old and seven-year-old children. The acts were allegedly committed over a period of time. Each incident reportedly occurred at a home on 750 North in Monterey.
A recent measles outbreak has the Starke County Health Department reminding area residents to have up-to-date vaccinations.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 102 cases of the disease were reported in the U.S. in January. Measles is considered highly contagious.

The Pulaski County Commissioners reviewed the copier lease when they met earlier this week.
Commission President Larry Brady told WKVI News that the county experienced hefty overcharges so efforts are being made to correct the problem. The amount of color copies made was the biggest problem. Brady said the staff was not pushing the right button to print in just black and white and they were all color copies. The information has been relayed to everyone so the copier can be utilized properly.

Mother Nature isn’t done with us yet. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the area from noon EST/11 a.m. CST until 7 p.m. EST/6 p.m. CST today. Snow accumulations of between 2 and 4 inches are expected, with locally heavier amounts possible. Visibility may be reduced during periods of heavy snowfall. Motorists should expect snow-covered roads and plan accordingly. Remember, ice and snow, take it slow.
Things are getting better at the highway department, according to Pulaski County Commission President Larry Brady.
When the commissioners last met in January, Commissioner Bud Krohn, Jr. made a motion to appoint a person as the second person in charge at the highway department and the change was approved by a vote of 2 to 1. Traditionally, the second person in charge is appointed by the superintendent.
