Each year the Public Interest Research Group releases a Trouble in Toyland report, disclosing which toys are unfit to be sold. This year more than 150 toys were either recalled or taken off of store shelves as a result of the report.

Retirement Party Planned Today for Pulaski County Sheriff
Pulaski County Sheriff Mike Gayer is retiring after two terms in office. Members of the public are invited to celebrate with him today at the sheriff’s office in Winamac. The party will take place from noon until 1:30 p.m. EST in the sheriff’s training room.
Pulaski County Commissioner, Recycling Center Director Commended for Years of Service, Clark
Pulaski County Commissioner Tracey Shorter was recognized by Commission President Larry Brady for her years of service to the residents of Pulaski County.
Brady presented Shorter with a plaque. Shorter did not run for re-election in this year’s election for her seat on the county commission. Bud Krohn, Jr. will begin his four-year term on Jan. 1. The first meeting of the Pulaski County Commissioners in 2015 is Jan. 5.
Hometown Collaboration Initiative Team to Visit Pulaski County
A team of state officials will be in Pulaski County today to meet with local officials. The county is one of six finalists for the state’s new Hometown Collaboration Initiative. It seeks to help small communities expand their pipeline of local leaders, strengthen and expand jobs by building on existing economic assets and to improve attractiveness and quality of life of their hometowns. Four Bridges in Pulaski County to be Repaired
Pulaski County Highway Superintendent Mark Fox informed the commissioners this week that there are three bridges on the 12-month inspection cycle. Work will be done soon to remove them from that list.
“We’re going to place wrap underneath these bridges to correct a substructure undercutting issue and those three will be able to be removed from that 12 month inspection cycle once we complete that,” stated Fox.
Attempted Murder Defendant Makes Initial Court Appearance

Flu Shots Available at Local Health Departments
Health officials urge you to get a flu shot to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Pulaski County Health Nurse Andrea Keller said the number of cases of fever and respiratory illness has increased. Keller told WKVI News that the flu shot is the number one defense against the virus. She noted that there are plenty of flu shots available at the Pulaski County Health Department. She administers shots Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET.
Starke County Health Nurse Frank Lynch encourages patrons to stop in the office to get a flu shot. He stated that he has an ample supply of vaccinations. To help prevent the spread of the flu, wash hands often and thoroughly, sneeze and cough into a tissue and stay home if you are sick.
Pulaski County EMS Looking for Paramedics
Paramedics continue to cycle out of the Pulaski County EMS department which leaves the department shorthanded.
Brandon DeLorenzo from Pulaski County EMS told the commissioners this week that they are still working on getting paramedics at the department and to keep them there. Paramedics are in high demand and in desperate need at the Pulaski County facility.
Justice Center Equipment Installation Delayed
The water heater installation at the Pulaski County Justice Center has been delayed, according to Maintenance Director Jeff Johnston.
“One of the delays was with a vendor where they ordered parts for their machinery. That kind of set us back a little bit. They now have the parts that they need. They have most of the water lines in place. This week they’re going to start up the one unit and take the old one off line. We’re going to run it for a while to make sure that we have confidence that it’s going to do the job. Then they’ll remove the old one altogether and start installing the second one,” said Johnston.
Pulaski County Attorney to Hold Meeting with Counsel to Discuss County Home
A meeting is set for today to move forward with the closure of the Pleasant View Rest Home in Pulaski County.
Pulaski County Attorney Kevin Tankersley will be meeting with an attorney in Plymouth to discuss the matter and to see if the attorney would be willing to take over legal issues in the closure of the county home. Tankersley will not be taking over the legal issues in this matter as it was thought an outside agency would be a better choice in the process. If the attorney agrees to work with the county, the commissioners would need to approve a retainer for the attorney’s services.
Pulaski County Council Approves Circuit Court Shredder Purchase
The Pulaski County Council this week approved a request from Circuit Judge Michael Shurn to buy a new high-volume shredder for his office. Shurn told the council he found a self-feeding 28-gallon model for $1,883.31. Continue reading
Rep. Gutwein Reappointed to House Employment, Labor and Pensions Chair
State Rep. Doug Gutwein, R-Francesville, has been reappointed chair of the House Employment, Labor and Pensions Committee for the next two years. This is the committee that dealt with the workers compensation law that passed in 2012.
Absence of Smoke Detectors Blamed for Fatal Culver Fire

Pulaski County Considering Career and Technical Education Grant Application
The Pulaski County Community Development Commission may apply for a state grant to provide job skills training to high school students. County economic development director Nathan P. Origer says funds are available through the Career and Technical Education Innovative Curriculum Grant program to set up industrial repair and maintenance training programs at Winamac Community and West Central High Schools. Origer says it is a really high-demand occupation in the manufacturing sector locally and regionally. Continue reading

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department is fully staffed again, with one notable exception. Cpl. Paul Grandstaff has tendered his retirement after 26 years with the department. Local Soldier Gets Heroes Welcome Home
A local soldier got a heroes welcome home last night after a six-month tour of duty in the Middle East. The Starke and Pulaski County Sheriff’s Departments and firefighters in both counties escorted Cody Foust and his mother up U.S. 35. He’s with the Indiana National Guard’s 1413th Engineer Company, 81st Troop Command. The unit spent the past several months in Afghanistan performing base-closure and retrograde operations in support of the drawdown of Operation Enduring Freedom. Continue reading
