Discussion surrounding the Pleasant View Rest Home was held during the Pulaski County Council meeting last night.

Larry Rausch, who is a county home board member, said their number one priority is keeping the county home open and realizes there is some work that needs to be done. He said if the county home is deemed a historical structure, grants would be available to assist the county in getting these repairs done. He also had another option.

Eastern Pulaski School Corporation Still Reviewing Building Project

 
 

The Eastern Pulaski School Board did not make a decision last night on the proposed $14 million building renovation project slated to start in 2015. Superintendent Dan Foster says they do not want to hurry a project of this magnitude. He adds they want to make sure they get exactly what they want in the end. The work will be funded through a tax increase.

Check for Excise Tax Eligibility on the BMV Website

 
 

You can check to see if you are eligible for an excise tax refund on the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicle’s website.

BMV Commissioner Don Snemis said letters have been sent to those who are eligible but in case you didn’t receive a claim form, access the refund eligibility page at www.myBMV.com. A “Check Your Excise Tax Refund Eligibility” icon can be found on the right side of the page and users will be asked for a Social Security Number or Driver’s License Number in order to check eligibility.

Today we pause to honor the sacrifices of the men and women who have served in our nation’s armed services. Veterans Day is celebrated each Nov. 11th. That’s the date in 1918 on which fighting between the Allied Nations and Germany stopped, marking the unofficial end of World War I. WKVI-FM is the Indiana Broadcasters Association Market 3 Station of the Year. General Manager Jerry Curtis says the judges look closely at the service stations provide to the community.

“We have a full-time, full-service news department. They look at that. They look at other community events that we’re involved in, like the Pizza Hut World Hunger night that we did. Also the radiothon for the Starke County Youth Club. Those are all factors that they consider heavily,” Curtis said. Continue reading

Residents Grill Pulaski County Council over County Home Budget Elimination

Two members of the Pleasant View Rest Home Board of Directors and several residents approached the Pulaski County Council last week to discuss the elimination of the county home’s funding from the 2015 budget.

Larry Rausch and Michelle Roudebush explained to the council that 1,640 signatures were gathered on petitions to keep the county home open.

West Central School Board Approves School Calendar

west central logoThe West Central School Board approved a school calendar for the 2015-2016 school year.

Superintendent Don Street said the calendar is similar to this year’s calendar.

“Our teachers will be starting school on the tenth of August and the students will be arriving on Thursday the 13th of August. We also had a little discussion concerning balanced calendars of the schools in the area that are looking at, if you will, a semi-balanced calendar,” said Street.

Police Warn of Phone Scam

  
 

Several complaints of a phone scam have been received by the Knox City Police Department.

According to police, residents are getting phone calls by people claiming to be from NIPSCO and demanding payment on their bill. The caller threatens the resident that a utility worker will arrive at their residence to shut off power in an hour if the payment is not made during the phone call.

Questions Answered about County Home’s Historical Register Nomination

The Pulaski County Commissioners and the Pulaski County Council met in joint session last night that included a presentation by members of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Historical Preservation and Archaeology. Paul Diebold, who is a member of the committee, answered many questions concerning the historic eligibility of the Pleasant View Rest Home.

Janet Onken from the Pulaski County Historical Society submitted a 31-page application to the DNR Historical Preservation and Archaeology in order to nominate the county home as a historic structure.

Mediacom To Remove Analog Signal Reception, Add HD Channels

logo_mediacom_mainStarting Tuesday, Mediacom Communications customers will no longer have access to most analog television channels. As part of its digital upgrade, Mediacom will not use the analog frequencies for channels 22-78. This leaves digital-only reception for the company’s Family Cable channel series, which includes cable news, sports and entertainment networks. Customers will need a digital adapter in order to maintain reception for those channels. Mediacom is providing them free of charge through Oct. 31, 2015. Mediacom officials say 10 popular cable channels have already switched to digital reception in the past two weeks. Continue reading

Joint Session Scheduled Tonight to Discuss Historic Status of County Home

A joint meeting of the Pulaski County Commissioners and the Pulaski County Council is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. ET to discuss the historic landmark status of the Pleasant View Rest Home. Members of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology will be in attendance taking brief public comments about the designation of the facility as a historic structure.

The DNR members had received 27 letters in the support of the designation in a previous meeting and decided to meet with residents to further investigate opinions regarding the structure.

Pulaski County Commissioners Approve Certificate Sale

  
 

The Pulaski County Commissioners heard a presentation from Glenn Luedtke from SRI about a certificate sale the commissioners can hold to sell properties that have been on the tax sales for several years.

“It allows the commissioners to sell these properties at a price less than what they were offered for at the regular sale. When these properties go through several sales, you have a situation or the indenture of the taxes and liens succeed the value of the property. This gives you an opportunity to lower that price to lower it again,” explained Luedtke.

Indiana DOE Releases School Grades

 The Indiana Department of Education released the A-F grades for all schools in the state on Wednesday. The release of the grades was delayed after the State Board of Education had received appeals from several schools.

Locally, Knox High School and Knox Elementary School received an A grade, along with Culver Elementary and Middle Schools, the North Judson-San Pierre Elementary School, West Central High School and Elementary School and all three Eastern Pulaski schools.

West Central School Board Meets Tonight

Now that the school board has approved the budget for the next school year, the next step is to plan the 2015-2016 school calendar. That will be discussed tonight as well as the course description books, the high ability grant, a rainy day resolution and other items.

Pulaski County Voters Elect Sheriff, Commissioner

 
 

In Pulaski County Republican Jeff Richwine is the sheriff-elect. He beat Democrat Paul Grandstaff in the contest to replace Mike Gayer, who is retiring due to term limits. Republican Bud Krohn Jr. beat Democrat John Plowman in the county commissioners race. He will replace incumbent Tracey Shorter, who did not seek reelection. Neither did Democrat Councilman Ron Powers. His daughter Linda Powers beat Republican Pam Chumley in that race. Continue reading

Pulaski County Commissioners to Review Courthouse Repairs after New Year

Pulaski County CourthouseRepairs needed to the Pulaski County Courthouse structure will be determined after the first of the year.

Maintenance Director Jeff Johnston brought up the issue after an assessment was received about masonry repairs at the courthouse last month. The limestone needs to be repaired around the perimeter of the courthouse as it has come apart. Mortar joints were found to be defective, eroded or missing. The stairs also need to be repaired.

The base quote given for repairs were just over $83,600.

Pulaski County Drug Free Council Seeking Grant Applicants

  
 

Grants are available from the Pulaski County Drug Free Council for programs that combat marijuana and alcohol abuse. Those are the main issues identified in the council’s three-year comprehensive plan, based on data from the police, prosecutor’s office, probation department and local treatment providers. They found alcohol abuse is on the rise among both juveniles and adults in Pulaski County. Also adult abuse of marijuana is increasing. Continue reading
