A Francesville man died as results of injuries sustained in a Wednesday afternoon accident in Pulaski County.
A Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department deputy responded to the intersection of County Road 1600 West and 600 South, about two miles southwest of Francesville. A delivery truck driven by Keegan McMindes, 25, was westbound on County Road 600 South and failed to stop at the intersection, according to a sheriff’s department press release. The delivery truck struck a pickup truck driven by Bruce Wheeler, 76, of Francesville. Wheeler was trapped in his vehicle and was extricated from the wreckage with the assistance of members of the Francesville Fire Department.
Both drivers were airlifted from the scene to Memorial Hospital of South Bend. Wheeler later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Petition papers to save the Pleasant View Rest Home in Pulaski County have been distributed around Winamac.
Funding for the county home was eliminated by Pulaski County Council members during their meeting last week by a majority vote.
Pleasant View Rest Home Board President Bob White told WKVI News that if residents are in support of saving the county home they can sign their name to the petitions at Sanders IGA, the Pulaski County Family YMCA or on the Pleasant View Rest Home’s website at www.keeppleasantview.com.

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department is experiencing a shortage of deputies to cover 14 shifts and outside county officers are coming in to help cover those shifts.
Only five full-time deputies are covering those shifts and part-time officers are needed to help with coverage for the county.
Matron Carrie Aaron and Detective/Sergeant Jason Woodruff presented paperwork to the Pulaski County Commissioners to approve a request to employ part-time deputies from other counties to help keep up with patrols for public safety. A one-time adjustment to the handbook policy was also requested to compensate the officers for payment for holidays and PTO time that cannot be taken due to this circumstance.
Pulaski County Commission President Larry Brady was the lone person who appeared on behalf of the county to speak on behalf of the Pleasant View Rest Home for its consideration as a historic structure.
Brady told WKVI News that he spoke to the officials of the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation of the positive aspects of the county home and also spoke of concerns of the facility so information on both sides was presented. He also spoke about the financing of the county home.
In a meeting set for this afternoon, the Pleasant View Rest Home will be up for consideration to be placed on the list of historic landmarks.
Officials with the Division of State Historic Preservation and Archaeology will review written comments submitted by supporters and non-supporters of the county home for nomination for placement into the National Register of Historic Places.
Parents should be aware of who is living in the area before taking children trick-or-treating.

There are currently 35 registered sex offenders in Starke County, 21sex offenders listed in Pulaski County, 88 offenders in Marshall County and 183 sex offenders in LaPorte County.
Members of the Pleasant View Rest Home Board, employees of the facility and family members of the residents in the county home appeared before the Pulaski County Commissioners last night to ask for the commissioners’ support to keep the county home open.
The Pulaski County Council members voted last week by a majority vote to eliminate the funding for the county home in the 2015 budget.
Pleasant View Rest Home Board President Bob White read a letter to the commissioners submitted by the residents to keep the county home open. He asked that the county home board and the county work together to keep the facility operational. Employees made an impassioned plea to support the people in their effort.
Hospital officials are taking steps to ensure they can fight the Ebola virus if it enters the area.
The Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, with hospitals in Mishawaka and Plymouth, released a statement where they assured the residents that they are prepared to respond to the Ebola virus with care.
According to a statement on their website, SJRMC officials they say that clinicians are well trained to identify, to care for and to monitor potentially high-risk patients and provide treatment in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s infectious disease procedures.
Members of the Pleasant View Rest Home Board of Directors are expected to appear at the Pulaski County Commissioners meeting tonight to discuss the recent action by the county council members to eliminate the county home’s funding from the 2015 budget.
Board President Bob White told WKVI News last week that board members may appear and discuss the issue. He said that they are against the decision and didn’t know that the topic would be up for a vote before the officials last Monday night. He hopes to convince county officials to keep the county home operational and to continue to offer care to the nine residents there.
Absentee voting is still available to those who will not be available to go to the polls on Election Day.
Marshall County has recorded a total of 353 of absentee votes so far while Pulaski County has had 147 absentee voters. The Starke County Clerk’s office reported 272 walk-in voters and 60 mail-in votes.
In Starke County, in-office absentee voting will be Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. CT in the second floor meeting room in the courthouse from now until Oct. 31. The same hours will apply for Saturday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 1. Evening voting hours are available on Tuesday, Oct. 21 and Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. CT and Thursday, Oct. 23 and Thursday, Oct. 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. CT.
Pulaski County Recorder Christi Hoffa presented a request for a part time person in her office to help scan documents to include in the Doxpop system for title searches.
Hoffa said that extra help could speed up the process that is currently being done in the office.
“While we have a good amount of information available online, not all of our information is available for a title searcher to be able to do a 50 year search,” explained Hoffa. “What I would like to see is to be able to hire a part time person for the office strictly to work on this project and to speed it up – to get more information online, scanned and available to these people to purchase and to be able to do their title searches and their their full 50 year searches.”
Ancilla College is rewarding students who finish at the top of their class.
Beginning in 2015, Ancilla College will be offering free tuition scholarships to top graduates from Marshall, Fulton, Porter, Pulaski, Jasper, Starke, LaPorte, St. Joseph, Elkhart and Kosciusko Counties.
President Ken Zirkle said top students can get their college journey started with the Valedictorian-Salutatorian Scholarship. The college will offer as much as $13,500 each year to local graduates who graduated at the top of their high school class and commit to attend Ancilla College. Local salutatorians will be offered up to $10,000 in free tuition.
With the arrival of fall, leaves are starting to gather in yards and it’s time for the removal of those leaves.
Knox-Center Township Fire Chief Kenny Pfost asks you to be cautious if you plan to burn leaves on your property.
“First of all, try not to burn on a windy day,” said Pfost. “It seems like that’s when we have the most fires is when it’s really windy. Choose a calm day. Also, make sure you’re compliant with local ordinances. Have a water source and try not to burn outside of what you can handle. Don’t burn after dark.”

A middle school principal will be laid to rest today.
Rodger Seats, 56, served as the assistant principal at the Rensselaer Central Middle School. As a long-time educator, he served in the capacity of athletic director, assistant principal and a teacher at many school corporations including West Central, North Judson-San Pierre, Kankakee Valley, Delta, and Union Schools. He also coached a variety of sports including football, baseball, cross country and wrestling.
The price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline has been dropping.
Don Good from the Good Oil Company in Winamac says the prices will continue to drop.
“For the foreseeable near future, the trend is to continue down,” said Good. “We’re probably going to bottom out not too far from here. There are a lot of places that are starting to get under three dollars. That’s kind of under cost for some of them, but they’re trying to beat that three dollar mark. For the long term, we should be under three dollars and unless there’s a world event that changes that we’ll probably stay in that range for a while.”
A Denham man accused of killing his live-in girlfriend is scheduled to go on trial in February. Paul Katschke is charged with murder in connection with the Aug. 11 death of Amber Renee Taylor, 34. Pulaski County Sheriff’s Deputies and first responders found her dead at the couple’s home after receiving a 911 call about a dead, 30-something-year-old woman. Continue reading
