Written comments are still being accepted by the Division of State Historic Preservation and Archaeology for consideration to classify the county home in Pulaski County as a historical structure.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources notified county officials last week that the Pleasant View Rest Home has been proposed for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Indiana Division of Historic Preservation will consider the nomination during their meeting on Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m. ET at the Indiana Government Conference Center in Indianapolis in conference rooms one and two. Pulaski County residents are welcome to attend this meeting.

New Generator to be Installed Soon at Pulaski County Health Department

A generator will soon be installed for use by the Pulaski County Health Department.

The Pulaski County Council members approved an additional appropriation for the purchase in the amount of $3,500 in a prior meeting. It was advertised and approved again on Monday night.

Terri Hansen from the health department approached the council members on Monday where she reported that the generator still hasn’t been installed. The generator has been delivered but it’s in storage at the moment until it can be professionally installed. She expressed her frustration in the delay of the project.

Great Central U.S. ShakeOut Drill Set for Today

A drill is scheduled for today at 10:16 a.m. ET as part of the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut for earthquake preparedness.

According to Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery, Indiana is one of 11 states with 478,000 individuals and business professionals statewide participating in earthquake drills. Scientists estimate that there is a 25-40 percent probability of a damaging earthquake occurring in the central part of the nation within a 50-year window of time.

County Home Board President to Fight Closure

The president of the Pleasant View Rest Home Board is going to fight to keep the county home in Pulaski County operational.

The Pulaski County Council members voted 3-2 on Monday night to cut out funding for the county home from the 2015 budget. The complete budget was then approved with that approved exemption.

Bob White said he hopes to meet with county officials to reverse this decision.

INDOT Schedules Storm Water Open House in LaPorte

INDOT officials are hosting an open house tomorrow in LaPorte to share information about their statewide storm water program. It supports state and federal storm water rules. INDOT is seeking input and feedback. Informational materials will be available and will also be posted on INDOT’s Ecology & Waterway Permitting web page at http://www.in.gov/indot/2892.htm. The open house starts at 4 p.m. CDT at the INDOT LaPorte District office at 315 Boyd Blvd. It’s one of six statewide meetings on the issue.

County Home Eliminated from 2015 Pulaski County Budget

The residents at the Pleasant View Rest Home are going to have to find another place to live.

The Pulaski County Council last night approved a motion to remove funding for the county home from the 2015 budget.

The issue of bills not being collected and the high amount of money it will take to keep the building functional and up to code were the main reasons for the decision. County Council President Jay Sullivan said that he will notify county home board president Bob White of the status change and to set things in motion to get the residents a new place of residency.

Walorski Visiting Homegrown Businesses Today

U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski’s “Made in Indiana” tour includes stops in Marshall, Pulaski and Starke Counties today. She’s visiting businesses throughout Indiana’s second congressional district to highlight their hard work and contributions to the state’s economy. Walorski will visit Hoosier Racing Tire in Lakeville and tour ITAMCO in Argos this morning before heading to Rose Acre Farms in Francesville and American Oak Preserving Company in North Judson.

Absentee Voting Turnout Strong

The first week of absentee voting saw quite a few voters filling out ballots for the General Election.

The Marshall County Clerk’s office had 129 voters while the Starke County Clerk’s office had 108 voters and the Pulaski County Clerk’s Office had 69 absentee walk-in voters.

In Starke County, in-office absentee voting will be Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. CT in the second floor meeting room in the courthouse from now until Oct. 31. The same hours will apply for Saturday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 1.

The Pulaski County EMA Director will have a new vehicle.

Larry Hoover requested the title transfer of a pickup that the sheriff’s department no longer uses. Sheriff Michael Gayer had approved the use of the three-quarter ton pickup for use by the EMA Director and notified the commissioners of his decision.

Hoover explained that he does have money his budget for fuel and for travel. Because this vehicle will be used by Hoover for county business, he will no longer need to submit claims for fuel reimbursement for his personal vehicle. He will be able to fuel the vehicle using the county system and pay for his portion from his budget.

Eastern Pulaski School Board to Meet Today

The members of the Eastern Pulaski School Board will approve action items concerning contracts and the building project in a meeting this afternoon.

After the last special meeting, the board members met in an extended work session to fine tune the building project that includes all buildings to upgrade them to future education standards. Security upgrades will be done as well as classroom improvements and heating and cooling.

Pulaski County Recorder Requests Part-time Help

Pulaski County Recorder Christi Hoffa put in a request to the county commissioners this week for a part time person to scan documents into the Doxpop system.

Hoffa said she and her staff have been able to take care of documents here and there, but another person to do just this duty would greatly help efficiency in her office.

“With the installation of Doxpop and our current scanned images being available online, we are finding from abstract companies and title searchers that it’s great that it’s online, but we don’t have quite enough information online to really be able to assist them,” Hoffa explained. “Generally, they have to a 50 year search. We would like to have a part-time person and it would be to speed up the process of getting more documents available online and to be able to aid these title searchers in having the information online.”

West Central School Board Approves Theater Arts Class

The West Central School Board recently approved the addition of a Theater Arts class to the curriculum for the second semester.

Superintendent Don Street explained that more focus on English/Language Arts forced the cancellation of the class, but the class will be revived.

“Now we have an opportunity to have a Theater Arts class where the kids will learn about acting and study different plays,” said Street. “We put that back into our curriculum. That will be a one, nine-week class because we’re on a block schedule. We have some students that have some interest in that. We have a teacher that will be able to teach that. That’s a fine arts credit which counts toward an Academic Honor class for our students.”

Pulaski County Commissioners to Consider Deed Sale

The Pulaski County property tax sale was recently held and 29 properties were sold. Deputy Auditor Holly Hoover told the commissioners this week that 150 properties were not sold and she would like to have a commissioners deed sale to sell these properties.

She noted that most of the properties have been up for sale for many years and it’s time to get these back on the tax rolls.

“The difference between the property tax sale and the commissioners deed sale is that instead of a one year redemption when a buyer buys a piece of property at the property tax sale the owner has one year to redeem the property. With a commissioners deed sale, there would be a 120 day redemption. We want to get these properties that have gone unpaid for years back on the tax roll,” explained Hoover.

The county home in Pulaski County could be deemed a historic structure.

The commissioners received a letter from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources stating that the county home has been proposed for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

The review board members of the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation will consider the nomination during their meeting on Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m. ET at the Indiana Government Conference Center in Indianapolis in conference rooms one and two. Pulaski County residents are welcome to attend this meeting and to deliver comments, either pro or con, regarding the application.
