Funding Approved for Water Heating System at Pulaski County Justice Center

The Pulaski County Commissioners approved funds for a continuous water heating system at the Pulaski County Justice Center.

Maintenance Director Jeff Johnston explained that he attempted to get quotes for an Emergency Water Heater Repair or replacement and for a continuous water heating system. Johnson said he got quotes for the equipment that is just like what the justice center has now, but found that the continuous water heating system is less expensive, more efficient and will better fit the needs at the jail.

Judges to Visit Students on Constitution Day

Trial and appellate judges will be talking to students about the U.S. Constitution on Wednesday, Sept. 17 in recognition of the anniversary of the signing of the document.

The judges will be passing out pocket constitutions for the students to keep. Judges will also discuss how the jury process works and why it is such an important component of citizenship. The project may include a public service announcement about jury duty, a discussion about statistics on state and county jury trials and a mock jury selection.

Ancilla Offers Two Year Online Degree

A new program at Ancilla College allows students to earn a degree without setting foot on campus. Behavioral science is the first two year degree offered online by Ancilla. They have had course offerings over the Internet before but have never offered a full degree solely online. Voter Registration Open Now, Ends Oct. 6

Voter registration is open now until Monday, Oct. 6 at the end of the business day at the county courthouses.

If you need to register to vote or have questions about your current registration, call the Starke County clerk’s office at (574) 772-9160 or the Pulaski County clerk’s office at (574) 946-3313.

Absentee voting in Starke County and in Pulaski County begins Oct. 7.

Enterovirus Cases Confirmed in Indiana

Four Lake County children have been diagnosed with enterovirus D68. The cases were confirmed by state health officials on Friday.

The Indiana State Department of Health is working with local health departments and hospitals to detect others with the illness.

State health officials have already reported a higher than expected level of respiratory illnesess statewide for this time of year.

Fill the Food Pantries During Hunger Action Month

September is hunger action month. It’s a time to help fellow community members who are hungry.

One in five children go hungry everyday and more older adults are utilizing food pantries for their needs. Volunteers at area food pantries are doing what they can to assist families in times of need and the best way you can help is to donate.

Both food pantries in Starke County and in Pulaski County are in need of canned soups, canned fruits and vegetables, boxed cereals, pancake mixes, syrup, peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese, and pasta and sauces. Other items needed include toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste, diapers, feminine products, dish soap, laundry soap, and body soap.

Chip Seal Project to Close U.S. 421 in Starke and Pulaski Counties

U.S. 421 between the west junctions of State Road 10 and State Road 14 in Starke and Pulaski Counties will be closed today through the end of the day on Friday for chip seal and fog seal operations

This project is weather dependent and could be delayed. Indiana Department of Transportation crews will escort traffic through the worksite, but drivers are asked to find another route of travel during this process.

Pulaski County Council Members Briefly Discuss Airport Issues

The Pulaski County Council has had several questions concerning the operations at the county’s airport, Arens Field, and manager Bud Widner was at the council’s Monday meeting to answer questions by the council members.

At the last meeting, the council members voiced concerns about the payment for fuel.  There was a dispute over how much money the county should be receiving for the fuel that has been used and how much was in the fuel tank when the full-time employment began. That part has been ironed out and accounted for but the method of payment for fuel by customers was discussed briefly.

New Moped Laws in Effect Jan. 1

mopedsIndiana’s new moped laws will take effect in January. They will be split into two classifications both of which must be registered with the BMV.

Class A Motor Driven Cycles will include all mopeds and scooters with an engine size of 50cc or larger. They must be insured. The operator must be a licensed driver with a motorcycle endorsement and must wear a helmet until age 18.

Farmers Market Festival Planned in Winamac

The Farmers Market Festival returns to downtown Winamac on Saturday. Festivities begin with the Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast from 7 until 10 a.m. EDT in the AlightLife parking lot at the corner of Monticello and Pearl Streets. Live music gets under way at 11, followed by a puppet show at 1. Local craftsmen and artisans will have their wares available, and food and treats will also be offered. Activities include face painting and games for the kids.

Pulaski County Council Approves Funding for Health Department Generator

The Pulaski County Council approved the purchase of a generator for the health department.

Terri Hansen had been asking for a generator for the department for several years. After working with county maintenance director Jeff Johnston, Hansen said they are ready to make the purchase.

“Jeff Johnston, I talked with him a couple of times and he said the generator that would run our office is about $2,900. I’m asking for an additional in equipment for $3,500 for the generator and for any cost for the hookup,” said Hansen.

Pulaski County Council Discusses Salary Ordinance Amendment at Sheriff’s Department

The Pulaski County Council discussed a salary ordinance change request with the sheriff’s matron, Carrie Avery, Monday night.

The situation is unique in that a dispatcher and his wife work at the department and officials want to move one into the chief dispatcher role. That would create a nepotism law violation. To get around that, Avery went before the county council to request that they approve the creation of co-assistant chief deputy positions and put the pair into those roles.

Student Count Day is Friday

The ADM, or Average Daily Membership, count for all schools in Indiana is Friday, Sept. 12 and administrators are urging all students to be in school on that day.

It’s imperative that students show up for school as an official enrollment will be taken which will be given to the state. It’s that enrollment count that will determine how much money the state will give each school per student for operating costs.
