Pulaski County’s Most Wanted Fugitive Apprehended in Fulton County

A fugitive on the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department Most Wanted List is behind bars. Alyssa Breanne Powers, 18, was booked into the Pulaski County Jail early this morning. Sheriff Mike Gayer tells WKVI News she was arrested in Fulton County on Pulaski County warrants for unlawful possession of a syringe, unlawful possession or use of a legend drug, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and failure to appear on a theft charge.

 

Prevent Heat-Related Issues While Working

  
 

Summer is in full swing and it’s important to remember to stay hydrated in the heat.

Hydration is especially important to workers in construction zones, commercial bakeries and laundries, foundries, transportation and utilities, agriculture, landscaping services, and more.

Heat-related illnesses are preventable. Make sure plenty of water is on hand at your work site. You should not wait until thirst determines your need for water. Drink five to seven ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes, or one bottle of water an hour, to keep hydrated.

Town-Wide Yard Sales Set in Winamac

 
 

The Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce will host a town-wide yard sale event on Saturday, July 19 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET in Winamac, rain or shine.

If you plan on having a yard sale, reserve a spot on the map for $10. The maps will be available for all shoppers at the Pulaski County Chamber office at 102 N. Monticello Street in Winamac. The deadline for placement on the map is Friday, July 11.

Infant Death Under Investigation

 
 

Winamac Police Department detectives and officials with the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office are investigating the death of a two-month-old boy.

Winamac Police Chief Michael Buchanan told WKVI News that the infant died Tuesday morning at a home in the 400 block of Main Street in Winamac. The child had previous medical issues and no foul play is suspected at this time.

As you’re breaking out your bikini or swim trunks, take some time to remember certain safety measures to practice when it comes to water. The Red Cross has a number of helpful tips for disaster prevention.

Never leave a child unattended! Even if lifeguards are present, there should be a designated familiar adult easily accessible to the child. Have young or inexperienced swimmers wear a life jacket or some kind of flotation device. Teach children to always ask permission before going near water. Practice the “buddy system” when swimming, even if at a public pool or beach.

Post-Storm Power Restoration May Take Days

 
 

NIPSCO officials say it could take several days to restore power to areas affected by Monday night’s storms. As of 4:30 this morning, nearly 35,000 customers are still in the dark. That number includes more than 700 in Starke County, more than 600 in Marshall County and a handful in Pulaski County. Nearly 2,000 NIPSCO customers in LaPorte are without power as well. Local Crops Damaged in Storm

 Crops took a hit during straight-line winds that wreaked havoc in the area on Monday night.

According to Purdue Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator Chad Rushing, some fields in the northern part of Pulaski County, specifically north of State Road 14, sustained spotty damage.
