North Judson-San Pierre Graduate Cast in New Reality Show

A graduate of North Judson-San Pierre High School has been cast on the first season of a reality show called The Reel Deal.

Christine Barger said she was cast as a result of online voting and she will be working with some celebrity mentors.

“It’s up-and-coming actors and actresses hat get to work with celebrities in different aspects,” said Barger. “We have Judy Norton, Eric Roberts, Don “The Dragon” Wilson, Tim Russ, Dustin Diamond, and Holly Fields. What we’re going to do is work together in teams to compete against each other to create short films.”

Pulaski County Commissioners to Have Generator Information on July 7

Pulaski County CourthouseThe Director of Maintenance for Pulaski County gave an update on the generator situation to the commissioners Monday night.

Jeff Johnston has talked with officials with Hyre Electric out of Valparaiso to give him details about connectors to hook up generators to the courthouse, annex, county home, recycling center and highway department. He’s also gathering information whether or not what the county has is sufficient enough to work or if generators will need to be purchased.

Winamac Man Killed in White County Motorcycle Crash

 
 

A Tuesday afternoon motorcycle crash in rural White County claims a Winamac man’s life. Travis Hunt, 32, was northbound on County Road 650 East, just north of Buffalo, when his bike was struck by a southbound vehicle. Hunt was pronounced dead at IU Health White Memorial Hospital, according to WLFI-TV. He was not wearing a helmet. The driver of the car, Raul Salazar Diaz, 37, of Idaville, was not injured. Salazar was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license.

New Animal Shelter Opening in Pulaski County

6-18-14 Pulask Animal Center picAnimal lovers of Pulaski County can prepare for the opening of the new Pulaski Animal Center.

This non-profit organization aims to prevent animal cruelty and provide homes for misplaced animals. Their purpose is to educate the community about proper animal care and promote appropriate steps to prevent overpopulation. The facility will take owner surrenders and strays, but they do not have the ability to pick animals up. They can not accept any animals with severe medical conditions or extremely aggressive behavioral issues.

Purchase Fireworks from Licensed Vendors

 The Fourth of July is approaching and the Indiana State Fire Marshal reminds you to celebrate safely.

You are encouraged to purchase fireworks from vendors who are licensed to sell fireworks in Indiana and have a permit issued by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s Fire and Building Safety Division. Vendor permits must be displayed on the wall in the store. If you don’t see a permit and the owner cannot produce a permit, call the State Fire Marshal at (317) 232-2222.

Construction Schedule Set for Winamac Skate Park

A portion of Rinehart Park near the Pulaski County Family YMCA will soon be transformed into a skate park. Winamac teenager Clark Gudas took the effort on as an Eagle Scout Project. He told the Winamac Town Council he’s signed a contract with Hunger Skate Parks to begin construction by July 5th. Continue reading

Check for Ticks to Prevent Getting Sick

6-13-14 Ticks picEach year the Centers for Disease Control receives approximately 30,000 reports of Lyme disease in the United States. It is a potentially serious bacterial infection that is transmitted through the bite of certain species of ticks.

According to the State Department of Health, the concentration of ticks will be higher this year due to the long, cold winter. Pulaski County Health Department Director of Environmental Health, Terri Hansen, has a few tips to take into consideration when it comes to keeping ticks off of your pets, your loved ones and yourself this summer season.

Winamac Town Council Approves Sewer Rate Increase

Sewer rates for Winamac Municipal Utilities customers will go up soon. The Winamac Town Council on Monday approved a rate increase to offset what Eric Walsh with accounting firm Umbaugh and Associates says is a significant drop in revenues since 2011.

“Your revenues have decreased somewhere in the neighborhood of $80,000 to $90,000 on an annual basis,” Walsh told the council. A lot of that drop is due to a change in state law that caps the surcharge amount for customers outside the incorporated town limits. They were paying 50-percent more, but the town had to drop that to 15-percent last year to comply with the law. “There’s a portion of it due to some of your larger users just aren’t using as much water, and therefore their sewage bills are going down as well. The lion’s share of it is the reduction that was made via state statute last year,” Walsh explained. Continue reading

Pulaski County Council Discusses Summer Intern Pay for Prosecutor’s Office

The Pulaski County Council approved an additional appropriation for the prosecutor’s office for a summer intern.

Prosecutor Stacey Mrak stressed that the money is not coming from the general fund even though it is appropriated money. She explained that the money is coming from the pre-trial diversion fund which can be used at the discretion of the prosecutor. The money needed to be transferred to another line item in the budget for payroll purposes.

The additional appropriation was for $2,700.

Sandra Lee’s Studio of Dance 36th Annual Recital

6-12-14 Sandra Lee Studio of Dance picJazz, ballet, tap, Middle-Eastern, Polynesian and musical theater numbers are just a few of the varieties of dance patrons can expect to see when they attend Miss Sandie’s 36th annual dance recital this weekend.

Miss Sandie’s students start as young as three and range up through middle and high school ages and even includes a number of adults. Dancers from Starke, Marshall and Pulaski Counties attend classes at Sandra Lee’s Studio of Dance in Knox and have been rehearsing for this recital since September. The theme for this year’s show is “What the World Needs Now…” Miss Sandie says it is a nice counterpoint to the events in the news.
