A plan to renovate the Pulaski County Courthouse and expand the Justice Center has gotten the support of the county council, but not without a few concerns. Back in December, the county commissioners agreed to pursue a project that would restore the courthouse and install a security checkpoint, but move Circuit Court to the Justice Center. On Monday, the county council voted six-to-one to support the project and try to fund it.

Purdue Extension will continue to serve Pulaski County, at least for another year. The county commissioners approved the Extension Contractual Services Agreement last week. The county agrees to pay Purdue almost $62,000. County Attorney Kevin Tankersley said the agreement is the same as it’s been every year.

County officials have also been exploring the possibility of renting an ambulance or using a lease purchase agreement to spread out the payments.

A few popular events at the Pulaski County Fair will take place in alternate locations this weekend in order to get the fairgrounds ready for next weekend’s influx of visitors. Water is finally receding at the Winamac Town Park, where events will take place Monday through Thursday.
All pre-judging was done offsite, and exhibits will be brought to the fairgrounds on Sunday. Meanwhile, open class entries will be accepted at the Pulaski County Highway Garage on U.S. 35 just north of Winamac from 5 until 7 p.m. today and from 8:30 until 11 tomorrow morning. Learn what it’s like to live from paycheck to paycheck on a limited income during an upcoming poverty simulation hosted by Purdue Extension Pulaski County. An estimated 13-percent of the population there live at the poverty level. Statewide an estimated 1 in 5 children go hungry on a daily basis. Pulaski County Extension Director Natalie Federer says the program helps people understand the “complexities and frustrations” of living in poverty day to day.” She hopes raising awareness will help to more effectively address poverty issues in the community. The poverty simulation will take place Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. EDT at the Winamac Knights of Columbus. Continue reading
A Saturday poverty simulation event in Pulaski County has been canceled. It was to take place from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. EDT at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Winamac. Purdue Extension was hosting the event to help people understand the complexities and frustrations of living in poverty day to day. It will be rescheduled sometime this fall.
