The Starke County Fair has reportedly been canceled due to COVID-19. In a post on the Starke County Fairgrounds Facebook page Tuesday, officials said Purdue’s stipulations for allowing fairs to proceed would have made things difficult.

Open House Showcases Starke County Building Renovations
Visitors to the Starke County Courthouse will notice some major changes thanks to recent building renovations. Public access is now limited to the west entrance, which faces the Knox Moose Lodge. It is fully handicap accessible. All visitors will be greeted by a uniformed security officer and asked to pass through a metal detector. Anyone in possession of a weapon will be asked to return it to their vehicle before entering the building. Continue reading
Starke County Extension Homemaker of the Year Honoree Announced
A longtime extension homemakers member who is active in several community activities is this year’s Starke County Extension Homemaker of the Year. Vicki Jernas is a 16 year member of the Town and Country Homemakers and volunteers for committees and projects when needed. Jernas has served as the club’s citizenship officer for many years. Her special project is ad sales for the 4-H Fair Yearbook. She also assisted with the establishment of the Mint Juleps club. Continue reading

Starke County Extension Homemakers Offer Scholarship
The Starke County Extension Homemakers want to give a hand up to a local woman who is looking to complete her education or improve her vocational skills. They are offering one $200 scholarship to a Starke County woman who is 21 or older. Applicants need not be members of an Extension Homemakers Club. May 15 is the application deadline, and the winner will be notified in June. Applications and more information are available from the Purdue Extension—Starke County office at the courthouse or by calling 574-772-9141.
Starke County 4-H to Host Color Run/Walk
The Purdue Extension for Starke County is hosting a Color Me Green 4-H Dash – the first event of its kind for the organization – and they are inviting all 4-H Members, families, volunteers, community members, and anyone who wants to have fun to join in the fun. This color run/walk will be held on Saturday, April 5 with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT. The run/walk will begin at 8 a.m. at the Oregon-Davis High School.
Dry Spell in August Hurt Soybean Crops, Says Purdue Extension Educator
Despite high hopes at the end of June for an overwhelming soybean yield, Chad Rushing, extension educator for agricultural and natural resources at Purdue Extension, said the predicted yield for soybeans and corn has dropped due to lack of rain in August. He said this vital time for the crops was drier than anticipated and has had a detrimental impact on yields; while it’s not a significant impact, he said it won’t be the phenomenal yields that had been predicted earlier this year.
