The Bass Lake Beach and Starke County Forest would stand to benefit from some grant opportunities being explored by the Starke County Park Board. A few funding sources were discussed during Tuesday’s meeting.
Bass Lake Beach Gate House Replacement Discussed by Starke County Park Board
The Starke County Park Board is moving forward with the replacement of the gate house at the Bass Lake Beach. The structure was seriously damaged when a pickup truck reportedly crashed into it back in November. Starke County Building Inspector Terry Stephenson believes the accident, along with wood rot and the settling of concrete, has left the building unsafe.

The number of contested races is starting to add up, heading into the May primary. Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin has filed to run for reelection this year. At this point, the incumbent Democrat faces a challenge from Republican Thomas Decola.
Starke County Park Board Looking to Replace Bass Lake Beach Gatehouse, Following Accident
The Starke County Park Board may be looking at replacing one of the structures at the Bass Lake Beach, after it was seriously damaged in an accident last month. Park board member Roger Chaffins explains that a pickup truck apparently backed itself into the gatehouse, “The guy was deer hunting over there, had a new vehicle, didn’t realize that he didn’t have it fully in park, and the vehicle ran over him and then ran into the building.”

The proposed Yellow River access site at Range Road has missed the boat for a Place Based Investment grant. Now, the Starke County Park Board may turn to crowdgranting, to keep the project alive.
Starke County Park Board Requests Repairs to Bass Lake Beach House Patio
The operator of the Bass Lake Beach is being asked to make some improvements to the beach house patio. A group of local residents and Starke County Park Board members has been working on a plan to stabilize the seawall surrounding the site. To help find a solution, they’ve obtained the original drawings from the seawall’s installation in 1988.
Starke County Forest to Proceed with Timber Sale
The Starke County Park Board is moving ahead with a timber sale at the County Forest. On Tuesday, board members voted to let Forester Bruce Wakeland start soliciting bids from timber buyers.
Bass Lake Beach and Campground Lessee Credited 2017’s Rent Payment, Following Well Upgrades
The Bass Lake Beach and Campground’s operator won’t have to pay rent to Starke County in 2017, and it’s 2018 payment will be nearly cut in half. The Starke County Park Board decided Tuesday that upgrades to the facility’s well system made by Callahan Development, LLC were capital improvements, meaning the cost could be subtracted from the company’s rent payment. The Railroad Township Board is calling for a stop to the restructuring of the township’s fire protection services. Park Board Suspends Bass Lake Beach Gazebo Demolition Order
The gazebo at the Bass Lake Beach may be getting a new lease on life. The Starke County Park Board called for its demolition this past July, due to concerns that the structure was becoming a safety hazard, as well as a lack of funding to make repairs. Since then, however, members of the community have begun fundraising efforts in order to save the gazebo, organizing a raffle earlier this month to help raise money. Continue reading

Park Board Officials Question Beach and Campground Improvements
The Starke County Park Board’s frustrations with Bass Lake Beach and Campground manager Richard Callahan are growing. They’ve asked county attorney Marty Lucas to attend their meeting this evening to answer questions about the difference between capital improvements and maintenance. Callahan’s lease with the county allows him to deduct capital improvements from his rent payments. However Park Board President Roger Chaffins recently told the county commissioners none of the work has been permitted or inspected and questioned whether it is safe for the public. Continue reading
Starke Circuit Judge Fills Park Board Vacancy
The Starke County Park Board is fully populated once again. Judicial appointee Mike Meadows was appointed to a three-year term on the panel but resigned last month. Starke Circuit Judge Kim Hall recently appointed Roger Chaffins to the park board. He will serve a three-year term. The board is charged with oversight of non-municipal recreational lands, including the Bass Lake Beach and Campground and the Starke County Forest. They meet the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Starke County Annex building.
