South Central students will start the school year with virtual learning. In a letter to parents Friday, Superintendent Dr. Theodore Stevens announced that school officials have decided to use the 100-percent virtual option until further notice out of an abundance of caution. The first day of class is still August 12.

Some local school corporations are among the recipients of this year’s Digital Learning-Community Advisory Grant from the Indiana Department of Education. Triton received $50,000. South Central got $45,090, and Oregon-Davis was awarded $40,600.

A couple LaPorte County school districts have been awarded funding through the Indiana Department of Education’s STEM Acceleration Grants. The department says it opened a second round of grants for this school year, since additional funding was available.

A demonstration to bring awareness to student driver safety is set for Friday, April 24 at 10:30 a.m. CT at the South Central School Corporation.
The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is focused on safety for the upcoming prom season. Sheriff John Boyd stated that LaPorte County has not seen any accidents involving teen drivers during this time of the year, and he wants that to continue.
Sheriff Boyd wants to focus on the importance of safe driving habits including distracted driving. Cell phone calls and texting are two issues surrounding distracted driving.
Teacher Performance Grants Awarded to Several Local Schools
Educators at several local schools will receive a share of the $30 million in Teacher Performance Grants awarded by the state to more than 1,300 schools. Funds were given to schools with students earning ISTEP+ or end of course assessment passing scores of 72.5 percent or above or with a growth in graduation rates of 5 percent ore more from the previous year. Teachers who are rated effective or highly effective under Indiana’s teacher evaluation system for the 2013-2014 academic year will be paid based on student performance. Continue reading
South Central Superintendent Submits Resignation
The superintendent of South Central Schools has stepped down after a criminal charge was filed against him.
The Times newspaper released information that Christopher Smith was arrested on May 20 in LaPorte County after an alleged battery incident occurred between Smith and a friend. Smith faces one misdemeanor charge of Battery and has posted a $3,500 surety bond.
