A public hearing is set for June 1 to discuss the demolition and clean up of the debris from the Sportsman’s Bar and Grill in Monterey.
The structure that housed the business at the corner of Walnut and Main Streets collapsed during the evening hours of Thursday, April 23. An asbestos study was completed on the rubble where testing found the debris positive for the presence of asbestos.
The owner, Courtney Hardin, has 30 days to clean up the property. She will need to appear before the commissioners for the public hearing and comply with the demolition order.
A chain link fence now surrounds the rubble where the Sportsman’s Bar and Grill in Monterey once stood.
The area had been contained with a temporary, orange, construction-type privacy fencing project. A portion of the fence was secured to a dumpster that is no longer on the site. That led Pulaski County Building Administrator Dave Dare to contact a locally registered contractor in order to install a six-foot, self-supporting chain-link fence around the area this week for enhanced security.
Dare added that his department is in the process of making the legal notification to the current owner to attend a hearing before the Hearing Authority concerning property clean-up. He noted that cleanup would proceed as soon as possible. Continue reading

Pulaski County Building Administrator David Dare has been in contact with an engineering company for the purpose of requirements to check for the presence of asbestos in the debris from a building collapse last week.
Dare explained that it’s required by law to check commercial buildings for the presence of asbestos prior to demolition. Since the structure fell on its own, the requirement still stands. Expert services by a commercial asbestos removal company will be necessary in these situations.

Efforts are being coordinated to remove the remaining debris beginning on Monday. Dare said fencing and caution tape surrounds the area to create a safer environment. Dare mentioned that several Monterey residents assisted officials in clean-up and securing the area.
