Public Hearing Set to Discuss Cleanup of Collapsed Building in Monterey
A public hearing is set for June 1 to discuss the demolition and clean up of the debris from the Sportsman’s Bar and Grill in Monterey.
The structure that housed the business at the corner of Walnut and Main Streets collapsed during the evening hours of Thursday, April 23. An asbestos study was completed on the rubble where testing found the debris positive for the presence of asbestos.
The owner, Courtney Hardin, has 30 days to clean up the property. She will need to appear before the commissioners for the public hearing and comply with the demolition order.
New Fence Installed around Monterey Building Remnants
A chain link fence now surrounds the rubble where the Sportsman’s Bar and Grill in Monterey once stood.
The area had been contained with a temporary, orange, construction-type privacy fencing project. A portion of the fence was secured to a dumpster that is no longer on the site. That led Pulaski County Building Administrator Dave Dare to contact a locally registered contractor in order to install a six-foot, self-supporting chain-link fence around the area this week for enhanced security.
Dare added that his department is in the process of making the legal notification to the current owner to attend a hearing before the Hearing Authority concerning property clean-up. He noted that cleanup would proceed as soon as possible. Continue reading
Asbestos Found in Monterey Building Rubble
There is asbestos is the rubble of a building in downtown Monterey that collapsed last month. Pulaski County Building Inspector Dave Dare shared that information with the town council during a special-called meeting last night. A contractor he hired to check the site at the southeast corner of Main and Walnut Streets found two square feet of asbestos in the duct wrap in the basement. The Monterey Town Council will decide tonight how to proceed with the cleanup of the former Sportsman’s Bar and Grill. The vacant building collapsed on Thursday, April 23rd. Nobody was injured. Engineers to Check for Asbestos in Rubble from Collapsed Building
Pulaski County Building Administrator David Dare has been in contact with an engineering company for the purpose of requirements to check for the presence of asbestos in the debris from a building collapse last week.
Dare explained that it’s required by law to check commercial buildings for the presence of asbestos prior to demolition. Since the structure fell on its own, the requirement still stands. Expert services by a commercial asbestos removal company will be necessary in these situations.

Rubble in Building Collapse to be Removed Monday
Work continues to secure an area in Monterey where a building collapsed this week.
The structure that once housed Sportsman’s Bar and Grill gave way around 5 p.m. ET on Thursday. The building was vacant at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.
Pulaski County Building Administrator David Dare told WKVI news that work has been ongoing to move the rubble into a central location for removal next week. Efforts are being coordinated to remove the remaining debris beginning on Monday. Dare said fencing and caution tape surrounds the area to create a safer environment. Dare mentioned that several Monterey residents assisted officials in clean-up and securing the area.

Pulaski County Commission President Larry Brady told WKVI News that Sportsman’s Bar and Grill at the corner of Walnut and Main Streets in downtown Monterey fell at about 5 p.m. ET. The building was vacant at the time and there weren’t any injuries reported. A few bricks had fallen from the structure earlier in the day.
