The first day of candidate filing ended with a few contested races in Starke County. District 2 County Commissioner Don Binkley has filed to run for reelection. He faces opposition from county council member Bryan Cavender. Meanwhile, Dale Conley and Howard A. Bailey Jr. have both filed for the County Council District 2 seat.
Starke County has a new assessor. Longtime assessor’s office employee Michelle Snowdon was unanimously chosen during a Democratic Party caucus Thursday. Snowdon replaces Rhonda Milner, who officially stepped down from the position Friday afternoon. Continue reading

Representatives from the Starke County Assessor’s Office are visiting homes throughout the county to conduct the state-mandated cyclical reassessment process. They are required to physically inspect 25 percent of the properties in the county each year to ensure property records contain accurate information. Owners of property in Starke County will now have the value reassessed every four years.
Assessor Rhonda Milner told the county commissioners the state has ordered a new timeline for the process in order to more accurately track market trends. She says 25 percent of parcels in the county will be assessed each year rather than trying to squeeze everything into two years. That will put the county on a more normal schedule.
