Starke County Commissioners Take Infrastructure Plan Under Advisement
Investment in infrastructure is critical in order to see future growth in Starke County. That’s the assessment Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Charlie Weaver shared with the county commissioners last night. He and Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler jointly presented a five-year strategic infrastructure plan to the body. Local Officials Dedicate Reconstructed Intersection
Starke County Economic Development Foundation officials yesterday joined business and local government leaders to celebrate the completion of the road through the Knox Industrial Park. Thanks to their combined efforts, the intersection of Klockner Drive is wider between Culver Road and north of Pacific Avenue with new curbs in place. Knox Plan Commission Recommends Industrial Park Zoning Change
The Knox City Planning Commission recommends the rezoning of 16 acres of land in the Knox Industrial Park from residential to light manufacturing to accommodate a proposed business expansion. Planning Commission President Jeff Berg says the existing Traffic Control Specialists, Inc. facility on 300 South/Klockner Drive is bursting at the seams. Knox City Council Approves Funds for Shell Building
Money has been earmarked for the construction of a shell building in the Knox Industrial Park.
Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Charlie Weaver told the Knox City Council members last night that companies are looking for existing structures to move right into to start up their businesses. Weaver said companies don’t want to have to go through the process of building the site with infrastructure, permitting and zoning issues. They want to have a building that they can customize to their needs and begin their business right away.
Knox City Council to Meet Tonight
The Knox City Council will meet tonight where more discussion will be held regarding a dumpster ordinance.
When the council members last met, City Attorney David Matsey issued policy copies from other municipalities and to choose specific options that would pertain to city. He noted that the main goal is to restrict the time in which dumpsters can be placed at a site where a project is in progress. More information will be sorted out during tonight’s meeting.
Sysco Merger Could Put Starke County Site Back in Play
Houston, Texas-based Sysco Corporation’s planned merger with Rosemont, Ill.-based U.S. Foods could bode well for Starke County. Sysco bought 320 acres of land south of U.S. 30 in 2007 after announcing plans to build a redistribution center near Hamlet. At the time the company said the expansion would create 500 local jobs. The project stalled in 2009 due to the weak national economy. Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Charlie Weaver told the county council this week Sysco still plans to develop the site but has not announced a timeline for doing so. Knox City Council May Finalize Dembowski Center Use Agreement
The Knox City Council may finalize an agreement withe area churches for use of the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center when they meet tonight. The churches have asked to use the facility for free once a week to serve free meals to area residents. Tonight’s agenda includes the signing of a memorandum of understanding as to the details of that arrangement. Continue reading
Economic Development Director Says Starke County Still on SYSCO’s Radar
Houston-based SYSCO Corporation still plans to build a regional hub in Hamlet, according to Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Charlie Weaver. He told the county council he talks to SYSCO officials every two months.
“They say this is still part of their plan, as is the facility in Texas, but the people I talk to don’t have any idea when.”
