Starke County Election Board to Enforce Deadlines on Candidate Financial Statements
The Starke County Election Board is cracking down on candidates who don’t turn in their financial statements on time. “They have to close out their candidacy by preparing the forms according to the deadlines,” Election Board President Peg Brettin explained during last week’s meeting. “If they don’t, the way the law is set up, the county election boards throughout the State of Indiana can have a hearing for them, can bring them before the board, can assess them.”

Starke County voters may notice a new piece of technology the next time they head to the polls. County Clerk Vicki Cooley is recommending that the county purchase e-poll books. Under the new system, voters would sign their name on a digital tablet when they go to cast their ballot, rather than a traditional paper book.

In-person absentee voting in Starke County in advance of the May 3rd primary election will begin April 5th and continue through May 2nd.

Supporters of the North Judson-San Pierre School funding referendum have gathered the necessary signatures to ask the county to allow poll watchers at the precincts within the district. They will double check names of likely voters against voter registration lists to ensure supporters of the effort turn out to vote. In North Judson, Republican incumbent Donna Henry has drawn a challenge from Democrat Alicia (Amidei) Collins. North Judson voters will also choose between incumbent Republican Wendy Hoppe and Democrat Joan Haugh for the Ward 2 town council seat.
