Starke County Election Board Finalizes Election Plans
Supporters of the North Judson-San Pierre School funding referendum have gathered the necessary signatures to ask the county to allow poll watchers at the precincts within the district. They will double check names of likely voters against voter registration lists to ensure supporters of the effort turn out to vote. The election board will review the signatures on the petitions to make sure they are all registered voters who live within the county before approving the request during a meeting next week. Knox School Board Discusses Insurance Options
The annual expense and coverage of the Knox School Corporation’s property and casualty insurance programs were reviewed last night for board members by Mark Aldus for the Educational Service Center Risk Funding Trust (ESCRFT). It’s a cooperative self-insurance program service for some 40 school systems in Indiana. Area schools already in the insurance co-op include Argos, Plymouth, South Central, Eastern Pulaski, the JESSE Cooperative and several others. At the next board meeting the current carrier will make its presentation for renewal of coverage. Continue reading
Starke County Council to Consider Ambulance Purchase
Starke County EMS Director Keith Emigh will present three quotes for a replacement ambulance to the county council when they meet this evening. He told the county commissioners two weeks ago the rig at the Grovertown base recently underwent significant repairs and has since lost a cylinder. The county purchased the 2009 Ford truck used. Knox Covers Reimbursable Blight Elimination Costs
The Knox City Council approved a loan of money from the city’s share of the county economic development income tax (CEDIT) fund to cover costs of trying to clean up the city. Ancilla College Encourages Prospective Students to Visit
Prospective college students and their parents can get their questions about college in general and Ancilla College in particular answered during an upcoming event. The school is hosting an Access Ancilla Day on Thursday, Oct. 23. Vice President for Admissions Eric Wignall says the event gets under way at noon EDT on the Donaldson campus. He says it’s open to all ages but especially encourages high school juniors and seniors and their parents to drop by for a visit. Civic Pride Shines in Hamlet
Work continues to revitalize downtown Hamlet. Lee Nagai has installed a street light at the downtown intersection of Davis and Starke Streets that is similar to those used there decades ago. The town board is considering installation of additional street lights, of the same style, in the downtown area sometime in the future. Father Speaks Out About DCS Investigation Into Daughter’s Death
A prescription dosing error and an apparent rush to judgment by state officials nearly a decade ago following the 2005 death of a Francesville girl cost her family their livelihood, home and reputations. Roman and Lynette Finnegan and their surviving children recently won a $31.5 million judgment against DCS officials and others involved in the investigation of their 14-year-old daughter Jessica’s death. She suffered from congestive heart failure and died as a result of an accidental overdose due to a prescribing error, according to court documents. Earlier this week Roman spoke exclusively with WKVI News and said he had no idea he and his wife were suspects in their daughter’s death.
