Starke County Forest Dam Discussion Continues This Evening

starke-county-courthouseThe discussion of how to handle drainage issues caused by beavers in the Starke County Forest will continue during tonight’s county commissioners meeting. Surveyor Dennis Estok and representatives from Walkerton-based Territorial Engineering will present a proposal to the commissioners during their 6 p.m. session. The Drainage Board decided earlier this year to open a drainage point in the Starke County Forest. A beaver dam is causing neighboring land to flood. The Starke County Park Board, which oversees the forest, has since stepped in and asked that a long-term solution be found to the problem. Continue reading →

Starke County Election Board to Finalize Ballots Today

 
 

Starke County Election Board members will finalize ballots for the November General Election when they meet today. Knox, North Judson and Hamlet will all have municipal elections on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Also voters who reside in Jackson, Wayne, California, and Railroad Townships will weigh in on the proposed North Judson-San Pierre Schools general fund referendum. DNR Reports More Women Hunters

huntingHunting is growing in popularity among women nationwide and in Indiana, according to officials with the Department of Natural Resources. They say the number of hunting licenses sold to women increased by 93 percent from 2006 to 2014. During that same time period the number of female youth hunters skyrocketed 114 percent. Monterey Days Festival Continues Through Monday

Monterey Days FestivalDon’t miss the 18th annual Monterey Days Festival this weekend. Today’s highlights include karaoke contests for children and adults, a pedal tractor pull, mini excavating rodeo and a K9 demonstration by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.

Knox Harvest Festival Pageant Entry Deadline Approaching

pageantThere’s still time for Starke County youngsters to enter the Harvest Festival Pageant. The competition will take place Saturday, Sept. 12th at 3 p.m. at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox. The Little Miss and Mister Pageant is open to boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 5, and girls between the ages of 16 and 18 are eligible for the Miss Harvest Festival competition. Knox Plan Commission Recommends Industrial Park Zoning Change

Traffic Control Ssytems IncThe Knox City Planning Commission recommends the rezoning of 16 acres of land in the Knox Industrial Park from residential to light manufacturing to accommodate a proposed business expansion. Planning Commission President Jeff Berg says the existing Traffic Control Specialists, Inc. facility on 300 South/Klockner Drive is bursting at the seams. Moving Starke County Forward Announces New Challenge

They cite statistics from 2011 that indicate 37 percent of adults ages 20 and over in Starke County reported no leisure-time physical activity. IU Health Announces Leadership Changes

IU HealthIndiana University Health President and CEO Daniel F. Evans, Jr. is retiring. He is relinquishing his role as president but will continue to serve as CEO of the statewide health system until May 1, 2016. IU Health Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Dennis M. Murphy will be promoted to president of the organization, effective immediately. He will take over as CEO in May when Evans retires and will continue to serve as COO until a successor is named.
