Starke County Youth Club Honors IU Health Starke Hospital

radiothonIU Health Starke Hospital’s investment in the youth of the community has earned them recognition from the Starke County Youth Club. Executive Director Irene Szakonyi presented IU Health Starke Hospital President Craig Felty the Aim High Award in recognition of the hospital’s top pledge of $5,000 during the recent radiothon. The daylong fundraiser on WKVI raised $41,000 for the club. It provides after school and summer enrichment programs for students from Knox, North Judson-San Pierre and Oregon-Davis schools at sites throughout the county. Continue reading

Starke County Tops Voter Turnout in May Primary

  
 

The Indiana Secretary of State’s Office says Starke County had the highest voter turnout in the state during the May municipal primary election.

Connie Lawson released her office’s Voter Turnout Report earlier this week, indicating 12-percent of the 2.6-million eligible voters cast a ballot in the Hoosier State.

North Judson Residents Reminded of Fireworks Rules

 Getting an early jump on your Independence Day celebration could prove costly if you live in North Judson. Town Marshal Doug Vessely reminds residents fireworks can only be legally discharged on June 29, 30 and July 1-3 from 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset; July 4 from 10 a.m. until midnight and July 5-9 from 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset. Historians Discuss Plans for Lincoln Highway Byway

Lincoln Highway SIGN v4Representatives of the Indiana Lincoln Highway Association met with local historians last week in LaPorte to develop a coordinated plan for the development of a Lincoln Highway “byway.” The “byway” is the route U.S. 30 took when it was first developed in 1913 and then rerouted in 1928. The 1928 update of the highway (old U.S. 30) brought it through Hamlet and Grovertown in northern Starke County.
