The Starke County Forest is responding well to a recent timber harvest. Forester Bruce Wakeland told the Starke County Park Board last week there’s been a good amount of natural regeneration, according to County Attorney Marty Lucas. That’s preferable to planting new trees, when it comes to the forest’s management.

Park Board Gets Update on Starke County Forest
The Starke County Forest is starting to build up some savings. It’s designed to be a self-sufficient park facility, with timber sales being the main funding source. Forester Bruce Wakeland told the Starke County Park Board Tuesday that the forest will soon have enough money on hand to start looking at some improvement projects.
Northern Wood Products Offers $8,500 for Starke County Forest Timber
The Starke County Forest will make $8,500 with its timber sale. Northern Wood Products of Walkerton submitted the only bid. It was formally accepted Tuesday by the Starke County Park Board, at the recommendation of Forester Bruce Wakeland.
Starke County Park Board to Discuss Bass Lake Beach Maintenance, Open Timber Bids
Upgrades to the Bass Lake Beach seawall will continue to be discussed during tonight’s Starke County Park Board meeting. Board members are calling on facility operator Callahan Development, LLC to stabilize the seawall surrounding the beach house patio. Representatives from the county discussed the issue with Callahan’s attorney last month, and the entire board is expected to get an update tonight.

An update on the Starke County Forest’s planned timber sale was given to the Starke County Park Board Tuesday. Forester Bruce Wakeland said he plans to invite 40 or more licensed timber companies to bid on the designated trees.

The Starke County Forest is about ready for a timber sale. Forester Bruce Wakeland told the County Park Board Tuesday that a 13-acre portion has exceeded what he considers to be the best density level, and up to 20 percent of the trees should be cut down.
