The Knox City Council is looking at city ordinances and zoning ordinances to make sure that all property is accounted for so the city can control building and other issues in the two mile jurisdiction.
The only department that got an increase in the 2012 Starke County budget was EMS. The County Council expects that when the EMS is upgraded to Advanced Life Service, the EMS can charge more for ambulance services. Continue reading →

Three 19-year-old boys were killed in an auto accident early last Saturday morning in Royal Center. Erron Stoddard of Winamac, Brandon Lee Miller of Winamac and Bruce Leearmel Wireman of Culver were killed when their SUV crashed into the rear of a parked semitrailer. The driver, Joshua Barcus, at last report, was listed in critical condition at Parkview Hospital. Continue reading →

Officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department investigated an accident involving a pickup truck and a moped at the intersection of 600 East and 700 North last week. The driver of the moped, Divvad Niebuurt, of Grovertown, was airlifted from the scene. Niebuurt was hit by a pickup truck driven by Brandon Ferch. Niebuurt apparently failed to stop at the intersection, pulling into the path of Ferch. Ferch was not injured in the accident. Continue reading →

Staci Brown, of Knox, was arrested Friday, August 5th on charges of Battery Resulting in Death and Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death, both Class A Felonies. She is accused of injuring her stepson, Ethan causing his death. During her initial hearing in Starke Circuit Court on Wednesday, a preliminary plea of not guilty was entered on her behalf and she requested a court-appointed attorney.

Andy Howes’ remains returned to Knox on Monday and he was escorted to Knox from the Indianapolis airport by the Indiana State Police, Knox City Police Department, Starke County Sheriff’s Department and the Patriot Guard. A memorial service was held Tuesday night at the Knox Community Center and he was laid to rest Friday in Arlington National Cemetery.

Gabriel French, Elizabeth Boyd and Joshua Givens were arrested Saturday after officers conducted a search warrant at a residence in Knox and found active methamphetamine labs.
Brian Ball of Bass Lake suffered a concussion after a tree fell on him while he was putting up a tent in his yard. Ball’s neighbor, Jim O’Hara, found him unconscious and performed CPR on Ball when he couldn’t find a pulse. Continue reading →

Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff said that the death of a three-year-old Knox boy is still under investigation. Bourff has not yet received the autopsy results from the St. Joseph County Coroner’s office.
The Starke County Courthouse elevator is still out of order. A few more things need to be done to make the required ADA upgrades and the elevator will be operational after a state inspector gives the notice to proceed with operation. Continue reading →

Stephen Mills, 40, of Hanna, and Ricky Vance, 35, of Wanatah, died from massive internal trauma after being involved in a single car accident on State Road 8 in LaPorte County on Sunday. Speed and alcohol were factors in the accident.
The Starke County Commissioners and Sheriff Oscar Cowen toured the Marshall County and Miami County jail facilities last week and the Jasper County Jail this week. The Commissioners continue to wrestle with the idea of remodeling or rebuilding the Starke County jail and they visited these facilities to see how they function. Continue reading →

Irene Szakonyi and Kurt Snearly are not eligible to serve on the Knox Park Board because they are not members of the Board that named them to the Park Board. They are Ex-Officio members.
Ruth Matsey, President of the Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, says that she has been seeing a lot of child abuse in the form of neglect in Starke County. Matsey says that statistics show that more abuse happens where there is a lot of unemployment and Starke County does have a high rate of unemployment. Continue reading →

Mercan Lyncook of Parma, Ohio lost his life early Sunday morning after he jumped into the Yellow River off the abandoned train Bridge near the historic Depot in Knox and never resurfaced. Preliminary autopsy results have found that Lyncook died of asphyxiation because of drowning. The Knox-Center Township Fire Department recently purchased a boat for river rescues and it was used in the rescue attempt. Continue reading →

The Starke County Commissioners revisited the issue of a new Starke County Jail after inmate Jack Haut brought a class action lawsuit against the County over conditions at the jail. This week, the Starke County Council approved the transfer of $100,000 to help fund the County’s defense in the lawsuit.
The Knox City Council members told Knox Mayor Rick Chambers no when he asked the Council if they would be interested in selling Sandy Acres Park. It is assumed the land would be used for a business venture. Continue reading →

Herman Hopkins, of Knox, was arrested Saturday, June 4th, after he allegedly broke into the residence of Virginia Neace and battered her son. He was also reportedly in possession of stolen goods from the residence and the residence of Tony and Nina Radkiewicz.
The Starke County Election Board continues to look into the consolidation of several polling places.
Starke County Economic Development Foundation Director, Charles Weaver, says no new information has been received regarding the Sysco project in Hamlet, but Weaver says he is in contact with the Baugh North Central Redistribution Center about any developments that may occur. Continue reading →

The Knox-Center Township Fire Department responded to a fire at Sibo’s Grill shortly after 2:00 a.m. Monday. Fire Chief, Kenny Pfost, said that an electrical issue caused the fire.
The Starke County Commissioners are moving forward with repairs on bridge #156 over the Robbins Ditch. They leaned toward the selection of a concrete box beam bridge with an estimated cost of $116,000. A DNR permit will be the only one needed for this project. Continue reading →

Residents from the town of North Judson discussed gas prices with the North Judson Town Board members at their recent meeting. The residents expressed their concern that the prices in North Judson are higher than the surrounding communities.
The Culver Community School Board voted to close Monterey Elementary School at its meeting this week. More cuts are forecast as the Board has to cut $855,000 from the budget in the next two years. Continue reading →
