The West Central School Board approved the hire of a new high school assistant principal who will also claim the position of athletic director.
Superintendent Don Street said the new employee is returning to the corporation as a former student.

No Book Rental Increase, Summer School Programs Ongoing at West Central School Corporation
One piece of good news that parents and students will like for the next school year at West Central schools is the book rental prices at the corporation will not increase.
The board also discussed summer school for this year and Superintendent Charles Mellon said those classes are mainly for elementary school students.
West Central School Board Discusses Firearm Policy
It’s an issue that schools shouldn’t have to worry about, but it’s a national issue. During their recent meeting, the West Central School Board members discussed upgrading a policy concerning the possession of firearms on school property.
West Central School Board to Meet Tonight
The West Central School Board will meet in regular session tonight where Superintendent Charles Mellon will attend his last regular meeting of the board as superintendent.
Mellon is retiring at the end of the month after many years in the position. High School Principal Don Street will be taking over as superintendent on July 1.
The board members will discuss annual routine items such as book rental fees for the next school year and summer school programs. A discussion on possession of firearms on school property is also on the agenda.
The board will meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on at the central office building in downtown Francesville.
West Central School Board Discusses The Crossing Alternative School
The West Central School Board received information about The Crossing alternative school.
Superintendent Charles Mellon said Middle and High School Principal Don Street presented the information of the school which will involve Starke County students and possibly Eastern Pulaski and West Central schools.
New Principal Hired at West Central
The West Central School Board members approved the hire of a new middle school and high school principal during their meeting last week.
Superintendent Charles Mellon said the corporation is welcoming back a former graduate in this position.
Lunch Prices to go up at West Central Schools
The West Central School Board members approved several agenda items including the school board meeting dates, pay dates, and the budget calendar.
Superintendent Charles Mellon said there was a slight change in cafeteria prices for next school year.
“Just lunch is the only change,” explained Mellon. “The lunch price will increase by ten cents next year.”
West Central School Board Plans for Next Year
West Central School Board members are getting ready for the next school year. Items on the agenda for their board meeting tonight include setting school breakfast and lunch prices, considering changes to the student handbook and discussion and possible adoption of a student accident insurance plan for 2014-2015. Board meeting and pay dates for the upcoming year will also be set, as will a budget calendar. Discussion and possible approval of classified staff contracts is also listed on the agenda. The board will also continue the discussion of insurance for the school corporation’s wind turbine when they meet this evening at 7:30 p.m. EDT in the board room at the school corporation office in downtown Francesville.

West Central in Search of New High School Principal
The West Central School Board members met in executive session before their regular meeting Thursday night where they discussed the upcoming school year.
Superintendent Charles Mellon noted that discussions concerning personnel, fall enrollment projections and the search for a new high school principal were on the table.

He explained that the school had a decline in enrollment of 52 students over the past four to five years. With that and the addition to some legislation changes, the school has lost over $800,000 within that time frame.
West Central School Board Approves Make Up Days
Superintendent Charles Mellon said that a lot of different corporations are doing things a little differently, but West Central is sticking with its contingency plan.
West Central School Board Reviews Epi-Pen Policy
Superintendent Charles Mellon stated that those would be available sometime in February and stressed that they would be supplied and available for an emergency situation only.
“The law permits parents to waive their right so the schools are busy now sending out the information letters as this new policy takes effect in February,” said Mellon. “We hope we never have to use this device but we do have policy now that says we do have it available. We would save a life if we ever got into that situation. Once again, I want to stress that parents do have a waiver with that.”
West Central School Board Reorganizes, Recognizes Retirees
“Jim Bergens was elected president,”stated Superintendent Charles Mellon. “Dennis Gutwein was elected vice president which is his second term and the same with Kerry Miller as secretary. It’s his second time in.”
West Central School Board Approves $28,000 Program
Superintendent Charles Mellon said the program leader was able to attain the grant.
“Monica Gainor who writes this grant is in charge of the program,” said Mellon. “We get about $28,000 from the state to operate a program for our higher ability students. The board approved that.”
West Central School Board Approves Purchase of New Dishwashers
Superintendent Charles Mellon said the appliances served the purpose for the school corporation for quite some time.
“The one at the high school was the original unit so it had been washing dishes since 1969,” said Mellon. “The other one was the original in the elementary school since 1982.”
West Central Submits Application for Secured School Safety Grant
Superintendent Charles Mellon commented that Safety Director Chuck Evans did the work on the grant which was sent to the School Security Commission in Pulaski County.
West Central School Board Approves 2014 Budget, Health Insurance
Superintendent Charles Mellon added that the board approved a renewal on health insurance.
“We had about a four percent increase and that is through our MASE Trust,” stated Mellon. “We’re very happy with that type of increase. The norm is about 13 percent or 15 percent so we were happy with the four percent increase.”
West Central School Board Discusses Summer Projects, Budget
Superintendent Charles Mellon explained that the field lighting project is moving along. This project has been in discussion phases for several years, but now it is underway. The lighting should enhance the safety of staff and spectators at events at the football field.
