The West Central School Board will meet in regular session tonight where Superintendent Charles Mellon will attend his last regular meeting of the board as superintendent.

Mellon is retiring at the end of the month after many years in the position. High School Principal Don Street will be taking over as superintendent on July 1.

The board members will discuss annual routine items such as book rental fees for the next school year and summer school programs. A discussion on possession of firearms on school property is also on the agenda.

The board will meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on at the central office building in downtown Francesville.

Lunch Prices to go up at West Central Schools

 
 

The West Central School Board members approved several agenda items including the school board meeting dates, pay dates, and the budget calendar.

Superintendent Charles Mellon said there was a slight change in cafeteria prices for next school year.

“Just lunch is the only change,” explained Mellon. “The lunch price will increase by ten cents next year.”

West Central School Board Plans for Next Year

west central logoWest Central School Board members are getting ready for the next school year. Items on the agenda for their board meeting tonight include setting school breakfast and lunch prices, considering changes to the student handbook and discussion and possible adoption of a student accident insurance plan for 2014-2015. Board meeting and pay dates for the upcoming year will also be set, as will a budget calendar. Discussion and possible approval of classified staff contracts is also listed on the agenda. The board will also continue the discussion of insurance for the school corporation’s wind turbine when they meet this evening at 7:30 p.m. EDT in the board room at the school corporation office in downtown Francesville.

West Central School Superintendent Charles Mellon gave an overview of the school corporation’s general fund to the school board when they met last week.

He explained that the school had a decline in enrollment of 52 students over the past four to five years. With that and the addition to some legislation changes, the school has lost over $800,000 within that time frame.

The West Central School Board reviewed the new law that allows corporations to allow Epi-Pens at the nurse’s station in case of emergencies.

Superintendent Charles Mellon stated that those would be available sometime in February and stressed that they would be supplied and available for an emergency situation only.

“The law permits parents to waive their right so the schools are busy now sending out the information letters as this new policy takes effect in February,” said Mellon. “We hope we never have to use this device but we do have policy now that says we do have it available. We would save a life if we ever got into that situation. Once again, I want to stress that parents do have a waiver with that.”

The West Central School Board approved the high ability grant that was submitted to and approved by the state.

Superintendent Charles Mellon said the program leader was able to attain the grant.

“Monica Gainor who writes this grant is in charge of the program,” said Mellon. “We get about $28,000 from the state to operate a program for our higher ability students. The board approved that.”

The West Central School Board approved the replacement of two new dishwashers during their meeting on Thursday night.

Superintendent Charles Mellon said the appliances served the purpose for the school corporation for quite some time.

“The one at the high school was the original unit so it had been washing dishes since 1969,” said Mellon. “The other one was the original in the elementary school since 1982.”

The West Central School Board approved the 2014 budget this week that includes the General Fund along with the Capital Projects Plan and Bus Replacement Plan.

Superintendent Charles Mellon added that the board approved a renewal on health insurance.

“We had about a four percent increase and that is through our MASE Trust,” stated Mellon. “We’re very happy with that type of increase. The norm is about 13 percent or 15 percent so we were happy with the four percent increase.”

The West Central School Board heard an update on several summer projects during their meeting Thursday night.

Superintendent Charles Mellon explained that the field lighting project is moving along. This project has been in discussion phases for several years, but now it is underway. The lighting should enhance the safety of staff and spectators at events at the football field.
