Exorbitant Amount of Daily Transportation Changes Spur Safety Concerns at NJ-SP

Bus safety is a matter that is currently being addressed all across the nation.

Locally, North Judson-San Pierre Transportation Director Wilbur Collins took action this winter to install cameras on all the busses to catch drivers who pass them when the stop arm is extended.

Adjustments were also made to the bus routes to eliminate potentially unsafe pick-ups and drop-offs.

School officials are taking another step to improve student safety with a transportation policy change that’s included in the proposed handbooks for next school year.

North Judson-San Pierre School Board Approves Contractors for Lease Project

North Judson-San Pierre School Board members awarded several contracts for the corporation’s Lease Project when they met Tuesday evening.

Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin explained that when bids were opened in January, they discovered that they came in under budget. This will allow the corporation to move forward with some of their alternate bids which included upgrades to the baseball and softball fields, stairwell renovations, roofing and lighting work.

Zupin added that they will also be able to have signage installed on route 10 to inform motorists they’re nearing the NJSP campus. She said it will be an electronic sign where they will be able to put various school information and community announcements. Continue reading

Construction Administrator Provides Project Updates to North Judson-San Pierre School Board

When the North Judson-San Pierre School Board met last week they received a project report from Edward Sawa, the construction administrator of Fanning Howey.

Sawa has been working closely with Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin and Maintenance Director Wilbur Collins to determine the specifics of current capital projects. Last Tuesday Sawa informed board members of some the key preliminary findings from some onsite investigations.

Investment in Energy Efficiency Earns N.J.-S.P. Schools a NIPSCO Rebate

Lighting updates at North Judson-San Pierre Schools are already paying off for the corporation. The change from fluorescent to LED bulbs and fixtures will save considerable money over the long term. It also earned the corporation an energy efficiency rebate from NIPSCO. Major Accounts Manager Kelley Davies presented school corporation officials a check for $20,800. She says such rebates are an incentive for schools, businesses and individuals to invest in energy efficiency upgrades. Continue reading
