Winamac Electric Rates to Increase

The Winamac Town Council members held a public hearing recently to discuss an increase in electric rates.

Customers that reside in the city limits will have a new minimum payment of $122.09 based on 1000 kw of use. Those who reside outside the city limits will have a new minimum payment of $127.09 based on 1000 kw of use.  This is not average usage, but an example of how rates would increase.  The billing will be decided on  how many kilowatts are used in the household.  The increase is 11.2 percent.

Spotlight Breakfast Scheduled at The Crossing

The CrossingCommunity members are invited to learn more about Starke County’s newest school during a spotlight breakfast. It’s scheduled at The Crossing campus on U.S. 35 next to Save A Lot on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7:30 a.m. The faith-based alternative school opened recently and provides a combination of classroom and vocational training for students who have dropped out, been expelled or otherwise fallen through the cracks in the public school system. Celebrate the Grand Opening of the Winamac Skatepark Today

Winamac SkateparkWinamac teenager Clark Gudas’ dream of building a stake park as an Eagle Scout project has come true. The community is invited to celebrate that accomplishment today at the grand opening of the Winamac Skatepark. It’s located in Rinehart Park next to the Pulaski County Family YMCA. Gudas oversaw all aspects of design, fundraising and construction.

“After years and years of work and not being sure if this was actually going to come together, being able to actually see the concrete being poured and see the final product – It’s just amazing to see that I did this,” Gudas said. He’s completed the necessary paperwork for his Eagle Scout project and is waiting for his board of review.

Flooding Possible This Morning Across Kankakee Valley

Flash flood warnings are in effect this morning for parts of the WKVI listening area. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for Starke, Pulaski, Fulton and LaPorte Counties. Additional rain is expected until about 8 a.m. Central and could cause problems in low-lying areas. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall may also lead to flooding of small creeks, streams, highways and overpasses. Should water start to rise, move to higher ground immediately.

Tippecanoe River State Park River Overlook Dedication Scheduled

The second of two new overlooks at Tippecanoe River State Park will be formally dedicated during a brief ceremony tomorrow. Jenise Barnhouse donated money to the project in memory of her father, Floyd.

Several businesses contributed too, including DeSabatine Brothers Excavating, Good Oil Company, Galfab Inc., Two Guys Mechanical, Plymouth Tube, Gabe Wheeler and Wheeler Construction and Jason Keller and Keller Construction. State park employees and friends of Tippecanoe River State Park volunteers also assisted. Last year volunteers tore out the old overlooks to build the new structures. The first overlook was dedicated earlier this year. Through the generosity of many groups of individuals the overhaul of two river overlooks is complete and ready for visitors to enjoy nature at the park. Tomorrow’s dedication begins at 11 a.m. EDT behind the park’s nature center.

High School Football Season Kicks Off Tonight

FootballHigh school football season starts tonight. Rivalries are renewed and a clean slate means anyone can make the impossible happen. WKVI and sportstothemax.net will be broadcasting a combined 20 regular season football games. Entering his 50th sports broadcasting season, Harold Welter will be ready to go tonight along with sports director Nathan Welter. Pulaski County County Commissioners Receive Update on Zoning Ordinances

The executive director of the Pulaski County Community Development Commission updated the county commissioners this week on plans to revamp the zoning ordinances.

Nathan Origer explained that the county council approved the transfer of funds from the CDC land acquisition account for the project and plans are progressing.

“Once I have the CDC’s formal approval and the plan commission’s formal recommendation to the commissioners, I will bring it to you. I will get a copy to you in advance as soon as we tweak any details. I sent a list of minor concerns to the company that has submitted the proposal. They don’t anticipate starting the project until mid-November and finishing in early spring. We are still negotiating with Francesville and Winamac to see if either of them want to adopt that same ordinance so that even though they’ll retain their same jurisdictions the rules will be the same across the county,” said Origer.

Pulaski County Commissioners Approve Purchase of New Ambulance

The Pulaski County Commissioners approved a quote for a new ambulance during their meeting on Monday night.

EMS officials announced last week that the ambulance damaged from a February fire and subsequently repaired did not pass state inspection so it was totaled by the insurance company.

During this week’s meeting, EMS Director Nikki Lowry presented the commissioners with four quotes for a new ambulance. They approved a quote from Arrow in the amount of $130,700. Since the insurance company totaled the truck, an $82,000 settlement will go toward the purchase of a new ambulance.

Pulaski County Commissioner Voices Support for County Home

A lot of discussion has been held on the County Home in Pulaski County in the past couple of months, especially since a preliminary study was released concerning structural issues that plague the rather dated facility.

Recent discussion held during a joint meeting of the county commissioners and the county council focused on three solutions to remedy the situation: closing down the county home, remodeling the county home or building a new structure.

No government officials have made a decision on what the future holds for the County Home, but there are some immediate repairs that need to be done to keep the building from further deterioration.

Eastern Pulaski School Board Approves Advertisement of 2015 Budget

The Eastern Pulaski School Board gave permission to advertise their first-ever calendar year budget.

The corporation just recently moved to a calendar year budget after having operating on a fiscal year budget for several decades. The decision to move was prompted by a difficulty with using state software to do budgets. Now only one school corporation in the state remains on a fiscal year budget.

Purdue Extension of Pulaski County Schedules Poverty Simulation

Purdue Extension LogoLearn what it’s like to live from paycheck to paycheck on a limited income during an upcoming poverty simulation hosted by Purdue Extension Pulaski County. An estimated 13-percent of the population there live at the poverty level. Statewide an estimated 1 in 5 children go hungry on a daily basis. Pulaski County Extension Director Natalie Federer says the program helps people understand the “complexities and frustrations” of living in poverty day to day.” She hopes raising awareness will help to more effectively address poverty issues in the community. The poverty simulation will take place Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. EDT at the Winamac Knights of Columbus. Continue reading →

Pulaski County Commissioners, Council Discuss County Home

The Pulaski County commissioners and the county council met in joint session last night where one of the topics was the future of the county home.

In previous meetings this year, Maintenance Director Jeff Johnston presented the county boards with a preliminary structural condition assessment of the county home conducted by American Structurepoint, Inc. The repairs needed are extensive and are estimated between $500,000 to $1 million. With that, the government entities are wondering what should be done.
