An event to introduce families to shooting sports is set at the Winamac Fish and Wildlife Area (FWA) shooting range later this month.
Experienced archery and firearms instructors will teach proper form and safe shooting procedures. Several shooting stations will offered where a .22 caliber rifle, 20 gauge shotgun, bow and arrow, and crossbow can be demonstrated and used for practice. All firearms, ammunition and equipment will be provided.
Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Gil’s nose landed three people in jail Saturday night for various drug charges. He assisted with a traffic stop in the 3500 block of County Road 650 South in Pulaski County.
A truck driven by Jason B. Maroules, 36, of Knox, was pulled over for driving on the wrong side of the roadway, according to information provided by the sheriff’s department. He had two passengers with him. Paul Mast, 44, of Bourbon, was in the front seat. A female who repeatedly told the officers her name was Amanda Cooley but was found to be Heather Manns, 35, of Winamac, was in the back seat. She was arrested for false identifying.
The hotel project in Winamac is in a holding pattern, according to Nathan Origer, Director of the Pulaski County Community Development Commission.
He indicated that they are working out some details with the hotel company, Wisconsin-based Cobblestone Development.
“We are trying to get on the same page on some different financing options,” explained Origer. “We’re also still looking at final property options. We are still very eagerly looking for individuals in the Winamac area who are interested in learning more about investing in the project.”
The Pulaski County Commissioners were forced call an emergency meeting last night after the well pump at the county recycling center quit. Maintenance supervisor Jeff Johnston scrambled to get prices for repair options. They ranged from a high of $11,250 to run 1,500 feet of water line and connect to the town’s infrastructure to a low of $2,450 to repair their existing well pump. The commissioners voted unanimously to hire Bill Montgomery Well Drilling to drill a new well and replace the existing infrastructure for a cost of $4,400. They noted this will solve the problem of having to heat the pump in the winter, as it will be located inside a building. Also the new well will last indefinitely. The commissioners cited concerns over having to make additional repairs had they opted to fix what was already in place. Tying into the town system was deemed too expensive an option, as it would carry a recurring monthly water bill. Johnston did not have a time frame on how long the work will take. He told the commissioners he will see that it starts as soon as possible. The commissioners had previously advertised a special session to discuss animal control for the county. That meeting was cancelled and has not yet been rescheduled.
As they have for the past eight years, members of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department hosted the annual memorial service on May 27 in front of the Sheriff’s Department in Winamac.
This ceremony is held to honor the memory of three fallen officers from the Pulaski County police force. The department recognized Sheriff Charles Henry Oglesby, Sheriff Milo “Mike” Lewis and Deputy Sheriff Shadron Kiley “Shad” Bassett who were all tragically lost in the line of duty. Family members received honorary license plates from the station.
Older adults are invited to the Winamac Town Park today for the annual Pulaski County Human Services Senior Citizen Picnic. It takes place from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the community building. Food and beverages will be provided. Blood pressure screenings will also be available. The documentary “Age of Champions” will be screened as well. The Pulaski County Human Services Von Tobel Center in Winamac and West Side Center in Medaryville will both be closed so staff members can attend the picnic, and home-delivered meals will not be provided.
The Pulaski County Commissioners will meet in special session tonight to discuss several items pertaining to the animal control office.
The commissioners will have time to openly talk about the Pulaski Animal Center and the animal control officer. The commissioners are attempting to decide which direction to take with each entity.
A Winamac man was arrested early Friday morning on a Georgia state warrant for rape.
The Winamac Police Department took 21-year-old Jeffery Mack into custody on the charge. He is being held without bond in the Pulaski County Jail.
The information into the nature of the alleged offense was not made immediately available.
Natalie Federer and Debra Winters from the Pulaski County Extension Office requested permission from the Pulaski County Commissioners this week to put together a community garden just east of the historical society museum.
A grant was received to start the program. Six to eight moveable, raised beds would be placed on the property.
Anyone in the community can plant seeds in the beds and help maintain the plants. Extra food will be donated to the food pantry.
Attending the garden makes it easier with the help of garden tools. There are tool and machine reviews online that helps people find the right garden and lawn tools for their money.
The first of two new overlooks at Tippecanoe River State Park will be formally dedicated during a brief ceremony this morning. William and Sandra Goble of Winamac donated $4,500 for construction of the overlook in memory of their son, Greg. He worked the park and spent much of his life enjoying the river. Last year volunteers tore out the old overlook to build the new structure, and several local companies donated materials and labor. The Goble family will join Tippecanoe River State Park employees and Friends of Tippecanoe River State Park members at 11 a.m. EDT to dedicate the structure. It’s located behind the park’s nature center. The ceremony will be followed by a brief, catered meal.
The Pulaski County Highway Department crew has been busy working on spring projects. Highway Superintendent Mark Fox said a lot of grading and culvert work has been done.
Commission President Larry Brady asked about the miles of roads that will be paved this summer and Fox said the winter really took a toll on roads this year.
Eric Galbreath from TV Cable in Winamac and Mark Dickerson, CEO of Pulaski/White Telephone Cooperative, went before the Pulaski County Commissioners last night to requesting the transfer the franchise from TV Cable to Pulaski/White Telephone Cooperative (PWRTC).
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department has two new K9 officers and they’ve already been out in the field, according to Sheriff Michael Gayer.
The pair, Travis Clark and Ryan Austin plus their K9 partners, recently graduated from a six-week training course and are being called out on a regular basis.
“They deploy the K9s just about on every traffic stop that they’re involved in,” said Sheriff Gayer. “They’ve also been called out by other agencies around us requesting K9 support.”
The Crossing accredited alternative school in Starke County is moving along, according to Executive Director Rob Staley.
He told WKVI News that several community meetings have been held and he’s encouraged about seeing the leaders that are jumping on board in support of the school. He noted that there is a great need in the community to help educate students who may have been expelled, dropped out or home-schooled.
The Logansport J.E.S.S.E. Co-op is de-centralizing and since the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation is a part of that co-op the Eastern Pulaski School Board had to make some clarification and housekeeping changes regarding some staff members.
The Eastern Pulaski School Board held a public hearing during their meeting Monday requesting an additional appropriation.
The school board approved a change from a fiscal year budget to a calendar year budget. A fiscal year budget has an operation from July 1 to June 30. With the change to a calendar budget, the school board won’t have funds to operate from July to December as the corporation makes the transition.
The Eastern Pulaski School Board signed a secondary contract for students to participate in The Crossing alternative school in Starke County. Superintendent Dan Foster said it’s a pay-as-you-go agreement.
“As we use it, we’ll pay for those students we’re sending,” said Foster. “We don’t have to commit a certain number and that’s simply right now because we’re in between locations. If they get the one going there in Starke County, and there’s one in White County, but there’s not one right here yet. It’s hard for us to commit because we may have a student that lives in the southern part of our district that could be 45 minutes to an hour to get up to Starke County. As things progress, that could certainly change.”
The Winamac Police Department plans to add another Dodge Charger to its fleet.
Chief Mike Buchanan told the town council the car will replace a 2008 Chevrolet Impala. He adds the Charger offers the best value for the money. He has $25,000 in his budget to purchase a new car. The Winamac Police Department qualifies for the state’s negotiated law enforcement fleet price but will still be able to take delivery of the car through Braun Chrysler in Winamac.
