Arson Suspected in Winamac House Fire

 
 
The Winamac Fire Department and the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office are investigating an arson case at a home at 1172 W. 350 S. in the Winamac area.

Fire Chief Bill Weaver stated that the firefighters have been called to that abandoned residence four times. The Indiana State Fire Marshal was called to the scene after the fire started the second time and all accidental causes have been ruled out.

New Stone to Be Dedicated at Winamac Pocket Park

 
 
In a combined effort, the American Legion and VFW in Winamac will be dedicating a new stone at the base of the flagpole in the pocket park. VFW Commander Greg “Hank” Henry said the VFW will be holding their annual Memorial Day services at 11 a.m. at the courthouse; immediately following that, he said the VFW and American Legion will travel to the new pocket park in Winamac to dedicate a new stone at 11:30 a.m.

Town of Winamac Begins 50/50 Sidewalk Program

The Winamac Town Board this week discussed the 50/50 sidewalk program which has recently kicked off with a budget of $10,000. However, some people have already put in new sidewalks and have asked the town that they be reimbursed, and board member Richard Denney suggested to look into the possibility of reimbursing those residents after all applications have been received. If there is money left over, he would like to see the people reimbursed.

Winamac Town Board Modifies a Number of Policies

The Winamac Town Board last week tabled discussion regarding the new employee handbook and addressed a number of issues brought forward by Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger during their regular meeting on May 13.

Berger asked the council to consider requiring that property owners be responsible for any unpaid water and electric bills after a renter moves out, leaving the town with an outstanding bill. Following a discussion, the council voted to raise the water and electric deposits as a solution to the matter and an ordinance will need to be written for these changes to take effect.

Winamac Officer to Appear in Court on Theft Charge

 
 

A Winamac police officer who allegedly admitted to taking money from an evidence storage locker at the Winamac Police Department will have an initial hearing in Pulaski Circuit Court Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET.

Daymond Hartley, a Winamac officer on the night shift, allegedly admitted to Winamac Police Chief Michael Buchanan that he took $6,352 from the storage locker while working a shift during the last week of March. The money had been collected as evidence regarding a fatal accident involving Jamie Sheets of Winamac.

Williard E. George, 67, of Winamac, passed away on Sunday, May 5 at his residence. No funeral services will be scheduled.  The Frain Mortuary in Winamac is in charge of arrangements.

Winamac Town Park Closed While Flooding Remains an Issue

 
 
Flooding remains an issue in Pulaski County.

Minor flooding is occurring in the Ora area and some residences have been affected.

The Winamac Town Park is closed while river waters have spilled into the park. Park Superintendent Rick Dilts says water remains on the roads in the lowest part of the park, which is located by the baseball diamonds. The ticket booth for the power show is about halfway underwater and the 4-H buildings in the back of the park are reportedly suffering flooding issues. Dilts indicated that there won’t be many tree branches or other debris to pick up and not a lot of damage is predicted.

Flooding Forces Fair Breakfast Cancellation

 
 

Flooding in the Winamac Town Park has forced the cancellation of Saturday’s Pulaski County Fair Association breakfast. A new date has not been set. The river is expected to remain above the 10 foot flood stage in Winamac until at least this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Additional rain is possible later this week. The river is also out of its banks near Ora, where flooding is affecting nearby homes. It’s not expected to crest until early tomorrow morning.

 

 

 

 

DNR Encourages Participation in National Volunteer Week

 
 

Hoosiers are invited to participate in National Volunteer Week by helping Indiana’s State Parks & Reservoirs. Jody Heaston, volunteer coordinator for the DNR Division of State Parks & Reservoirs, says there are many opportunities from maintaining trails to entering computer data. Heaston hopes many volunteers from National Volunteer Week will “catch the giving-back spirit” and continue to volunteer throughout the year. The Tippecanoe River State Park north of Winamac is always in need of volunteers. Park management and the nonprofit Friends of Tippecanoe River State Park are teaming up on Saturday, May 4 to host a volunteer day and spring clean the nature center, work on the new scenic overlooks and get the horse campground ready for the park’s busy season. Winamac Church Offers A Hand Up for Families in Need

  
 
Members of a Winamac church have cleaned their closets out and want to give back to the community. Fellowship Baptist Church is hosting a Spring Cleaning Clothing Giveaway on Saturday, April 27 from 8 a.m. until noon EDT. Organizers want items to go to people who are having a hard time making ends meet and need a helping hand. They’ve got a variety of men’s women’s and children’s clothing and accessories for all seasons. Any items not given away will be donated to charity. Fellowship Baptist Church is located at the corner of State Road 119 and 100 South just south of Winamac.

Flood Warning Issued For Tippecanoe and Yellow Rivers

Flood warningFlooding is likely in the WKVI listening area due to the recent heavy rainfall. The National Weather Services has issued a flood warning for the Tippecanoe River in Ora and above Winamac and for the Yellow River at Knox and Plymouth. The most immediate concern is the Tippy in the Monterey area, which is approaching the flood stage of 12 feet. It’s expected to rise above that stage tonight and crest at 13 feet around 8 a.m. EDT Sunday. At 13 feet the river begins to affect streets and homes in downtown Monterey. This crest compares to the May 18, 2009 flood when the Tippecanoe crested at 13.3 feet. Continue reading

Winamac Honored as Tree City USA

The Town of Winamac has once again been honored as a Tree City USA by the Department of Natural Resources.

It’s one of 65 Indiana communities honored this year for environmental stewardship. Winamac has made the list each year since 1999. In order to achieve Tree City USA honors, a community must have a tree committee, a tree ordinance, a community forestry program and an Arbor Day recognition.

Winamac Runners Unharmed in Boston Marathon Blast

  
 

There’s a little good news in the wake of yesterday’s bombing at the Boston Marathon. Three Winamac men who ran yesterday’s race are safe after a pair of blasts rocked the finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 145. Glenn Bailey and Mike Haschel had already finished the race. George Nietert, who teaches in Winamac, is also safe. If you have a loved one in the Boston area who is unaccounted for, you can call 617-635-4500 to check on them.

Winamac Police Department to Add Part-Time Officers

 
 
The Winamac Police Department plans to hire a couple of part-time officers. Chief Mike Buchanan says longtime Sgt. Dwight Peterson is planning to retire later this year, and he wants to get some people on the force before then. Buchanan told the town council there’s money in his budget for the extra help. He plans to hire officers who have already been through the police academy in order to curb costs.
