Officials will continue their investigation Friday following a major fire at the Winamac Fraternal Order of Eagles Post #2580.
It took firefighters from multiple agencies about 10 hours to extinguish flames and contain hotspots in the rubble. Responders were able to leave the scene around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening.
Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office have been called in to determine the cause and origin of the blaze that destroyed the Winamac Eagles building on State Road 14 west. Continue reading

Firefighters continued to battle flames on Wednesday afternoon that resulted from a morning fire in Winamac.
The Winamac Eagles Post #2580, located in the 600 block of West 11th Street, caught fire around 8:25 a.m. EDT. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but three State Fire Marshal’s were called to the scene to investigate.
Following their meeting Monday evening, the NJSP School Board held a work session to discuss the formation of a Political Action Committee. They considered various community members who could potentially be contacted to assist the school with the referendum process. The P.A.C would be responsible for making sure community members are registered to vote and spreading the word about the corporation and why the referendum is needed. Continue reading

A mobile home was heavily damaged following a Thursday morning fire in Pulaski County.
The Winamac Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call around 5:22 a.m. in the area of 3200 North and 300 West in Ripley. Once on scene, firefighters noticed the south end of the mobile home was engulfed.

Residents of Winamac will be traveling to a new location to view this year’s fireworks show.
The July 4th celebration is organized through matched donations and typically hosted in the Winamac Town Park. Due to flooding that is affecting the grounds, the fireworks show will now be held at the school in Winamac on the practice fields.

With the recent abundance of rainy weather a couple local businesses that offer summer services are suffering. Winamac businesses Tippe-Canoe Rentals as well as Riverside Rentals haven’t been able to let anyone out on the rivers for weeks due to the high levels. Conditions have just been too dangerous to allow patrons to rent canoes and kayaks. Continue reading
Flooding along the Tippecanoe River has left the ground saturated in the Winamac Town Park.
According to Town Manager Brad Zellers, however, there’s not much the Town can do to help with the situation. As things stand, water from the river is coming into the back of the park.

The Society of Innovators at Ivy Tech Community College is looking for northwest Indiana residents who are finding new solutions to old problems. Nominations are being accepted through Monday for innovators in the seven-county northwest Indiana region. Past honorees include BraunAbility founder Ralph Braun and the North Judson-based Kemin-Lambert Spearmint Team. Society of Innovators Managing Director John Davies says innovation is universal.

The annual Spirit of Pulaski County, formerly known as Germanfest, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 8 this year at the Train Depot in downtown Winamac. During the event, the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a spirit ride and spirit walk in memory of Tina Kasten and all other domestic abuse victims. The Town of Winamac is being affected by flooding on the Tippecanoe River.
Pre-fair judging for electric, consumer clothing and sewing and fashion review 4-H projects will be held off of the Pulaski County fair grounds. This change allows time for the fairgrounds to be tended to following recent flooding. Though the locations have shifted, all times remain the same. Continue reading
Several roads are closed in Pulaski County following recent flooding. However high water isn’t the only problem the highway department is addressing. Currently crews are out working on filling in some sinkholes that have sprouted up in the area. Continue reading
The first section of the Winamac Parkway is getting closer to being finished. Members of the committee in charge of the recreational trail told the Winamac town council Monday that if it were not for rainy weather, construction would have already been done. Continue reading
During their meeting earlier this week, the Eastern Pulaski School Board entertained the idea of adding a few extra positions to their payroll. The school is looking to add a director of curriculum and assessment as well as two summer employees for manual labor.
Sandra Lee’s Studio of Dance has put on nearly four decades of recitals. This year’s 37th annual show includes a variety of dances performed by students of all ages. Continue reading

During the Eastern Pulaski School Board meeting Monday evening, the board decided without any opposition to refinance the school’s pension bonds. Back in 2006, the state allowed schools to take out bonds to pay off their pension obligations, that money still needs to be repaid. With this resolution, the school will be taking advantage of lower interest rates to reduce the cost and still pay the bonds off in the same amount of time. Continue reading
