Hundreds are without power, as high winds continue to blow across the area. NIPSCO and Kankakee Valley REMC were both reporting widespread outages Sunday, with about 700 customers without power in Plymouth alone.

The last week of 2015 is off to a dreary start in the weather department. A freezing rain advisory is in effect across the area until mid-afternoon. Wind Advisory Issued Through Evening Hours
Batten down the hatches, we’re in for a blustery day. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the WKVI listening area until 7 p.m. EST/6 p.m. CST this evening. Southwest winds will increase to 25 to 35 miles-per-hour by mid to late morning, with gusts reaching 45 mph during the day. Continue reading
First Snow of the Season Possible Today
Trick-or-treaters could be trudging through the snow this evening to collect candy. The WKVI AccuWeather.com forecast calls for rain and snow showers this afternoon, with snow continuing into the overnight hours. Today’s high temperatures are only expected to hit the low 40s. National Weather Service Issues Flood Warning, Wind Advisory
The National Weather Service has extended the flood warning for the Kankakee River at Davis Route 30 until further notice. Last night at 9 the river was at 10 feet there and rising. Flood stage there is 10 feet. The Kankakee is expected to crest at 11.5 feet early tomorrow morning and begin falling. At 11 feet, flooding of secondary roads near the river begins. We’re also in for a blustery day, so hang on to your hats. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory, which takes effect at 1 p.m. EDT/noon central and continues through mid-evening. Southwest winds of 25 to 30 miles-per-hour, with gusts to 45 are expected. Isolated gusts of up to 50 miles-per-hour are possible. This will make driving difficult, especially for tall vehicles like vans and SUVs. Large limbs may fall, and isolated power outages are possible.
Wind Advisory in Effect for Starke and Marshall Counties
Parts of the WKVI listening area are under a wind advisory into the evening hours. Southwest winds between 20 and 30 miles per hour with gusts of up to 45 are likely in Starke and Marshall Counties today. This will make travel on west-east roads difficult at times, especially in tall vehicles like trucks, vans and SUV’s.
Several Weather Advisories in Effect for Kankakee Valley
Batten down the hatches, the Kankakee Valley is in for a wild ride courtesy of Mother Nature. A wind advisory and a flood watch are both in effect for the entire WKVI listening area, and the National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Kankakee River at Davis-Route 30, which will affect Starke, LaPorte and St. Joseph Counties. Flood stage for the river in that area was 9.4 feet and steady late last night. Flood stage is 10 feet. The river is expected to rise above flood stage this morning and crest near 12.7 feet early Saturday morning. That’s still considered moderate, as extensive agricultural flooding doesn’t officially occur until the river hits 13 feet in that area. Continue reading
