WorkOne, Starke County Highway Department Team Up to Offer Worker Training
Young people looking to gain work experience will have an opportunity to do so this summer after action Monday night by the Starke County Commissioners. They approved a partnership between the county highway department and the local WorkOne office. INDOT Hiring Seasonal Help
The Indiana Department of Transportation is getting ready for winter. The agency is teaming up with WorkOne of northwest Indiana to hire seasonal maintenance crew members and snow plow drivers. Positions are available across the entire northwest Indiana district, which includes Starke, Pulaski, Marshall, Fulton, St. Joseph, LaPorte, Porter, Lake, Newton, Jasper, White, Cass and Carroll Counties. Winamac Industry Recognized for Employment Efforts
A Winamac industry has been recognized for efforts to create employment opportunities for residents.
Officials from Galfab, Inc. received a WorkOne Achievement Award this week during a ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse.
Galfab, Inc. is a premier designer and manufacturer of waste equipment of all types. They partnered with WorkOne to utilize hiring services, along with the WorkKeys skills assessment and interviewing processes to locate, assess and identify individuals with the right skills for positions. According to the Indiana Workforce Development, over 40 welders have been hired in this partnership and over 20 young adults have received valuable work traits and industry knowledge through work experiences.
Ancilla College Announces Summer CNA Course
Ancilla College is offering a Certified Nursing Assistant course this summer. Graduates who pass the Indiana State Department of Health CNA test are state-certified to work as nurse’s aides in long-term care facilities, home health and hospice groups and assisted living facilities.
Prospective enrollees must pass a physical, drug screen and background check. The program consists of 32 hours of classroom instruction and 75 hours of clinicals. Courses will meet Monday and Wednesday nights from 6 until 10 p.m. starting June 8th. Clinicals will take place on Saturdays from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Students will take the state certification exam after they complete the course requirements. Continue reading
Starke County Prosecutor’s Office, WorkOne Partnership Helps Parents
The Starke County Prosecutor’s Office has entered into a partnership with the local WorkOne office to help non-custodial parents find jobs. Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff says a new program offered through WorkOne helps unemployed parents build job skills, get their GED, build up their resumes, learn interviewing techniques and other skills necessary to compete in the job market. Adults who want to learn to weld or enhance their skills can take advantage of opportunities offered through the Starke County Initiative for Lifelong Learning. Ancilla Nursing Teams up with WorkOne to Offer Affordable Training
A unique opportunity for aspiring nurses has surfaced at Ancilla.
WorkOne is collaborating with the university in order to help those who qualify receive assistance with paying for courses. Their nurse aid course begins June 30 and lasts until August 3. Nurse aids are the people who give direct patient care to individuals who cannot provide care for themselves. The course has a classroom portion, with instruction and a practicum portion, where skills are applied. It allows students to gain the sufficient certification required by potential health care employers.

WorkOne Offering Rapid Response Info Sessions for Whitley Employees
In the wake of an unexpected closure of a precision tubular product manufacturer in Plymouth, WorkOne will hold two dedicated “Rapid Response” informational sessions as well as job fairs for those who were let go from their jobs from Whitley Products.
The manufacturer in Plymouth released a statement last week announcing that they have been forced to close their doors due to a lack of funding from their senior lender.
Unemployment Insurance Changes Made
If you are unemployed and are finishing the first 26 weeks of regular state unemployment insurance and moving to federally funded extended benefits will now be required to go to WorkOne for an in-person interview of your work search records.
All unemployment insurance recipients must report three places they looked for work each week, but only those who receive a notice are required to go to WorkOne. In April, you will begin receiving notices in the mail. Make sure your address is up to date in Uplink, Indiana’s online unemployment insurance filing system, to ensure you get the notice.
Assistance for Employees Affected by La Porte Hospital Reducation in Staffing
There will be a special information session today for Indiana University Health LaPorte Hospital employees affected by the recent reduction in force at the WorkOne office in LaPorte. The session will introduce you to the many transition services available through the WorkOne system.
WorkOne services, including assessment such as Work Keys; free workshops; e-learning and training opportunities; labor market information and job search assistance through Indiana Career Connect; and information on unemployment insurance will be featured. Today’s information session will be offered at four different times at the LaPorte WorkOne office from 8:30-10:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to Noon, 1:00-2:30 p.m. and 2:30-4:00 p.m. CT.

Experience Works to Offer Paid Training for Senior Citizens
Experience Works is offering paid training and employment search opportunities for low-income seniors age 55 and older.
Participants with Experience Works earn minimum wage while they train, learning updated job skills at local non-profit and community organizations. They also get assistance creating resumes, coaching on interview skills, learn to fill out online applications and conduct job searches.
