Congressman Joe Donnelly weighed in on the situation in Egypt yesterday.
“I think this is the Egyptians seeking democracy and freedom,” explained Donnelly. “We are watching this very closely. We want to make sure that there is stability. It appears there is a gradual transition that is taking place right now. We hope that it can be done in a peaceful fashion and be done in a way that preserves democracy and freedom for the people in Egypt.”
Donnelly was asked if he considered Egypt to be the linchpin to all of the countries who are considered as friends with the United States.
“I think a number of the Islamic countries see Egypt as almost the cornerstone of the Middle Eastern community that they have formed,” Donnelly replied. “Forming an Egypt that works, an Egypt that has democracy and freedom becomes and example for all of them to follow. The rest of the Middle East almost looks to Egypt as a linchpin.”
