The Washington Township Board has decided to demolish the old elementary school building at the corner of Division Road and State Road 23. The board noted that the building poses a safety hazard and needs to be demolished.
Washington Township Trustee Shelly Kemble said the board is taking bids for the demolition.
“The Washington Township Board will be accepting sealed bids for the demolition and removal of the Washington Township Elementary School and pumphouse during the board meeting on July 24,” stated Kemble. “The contractor must have liability insurance and the sealed bid must be brought to the July 24 meeting.”
The meeting on July 24 will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Washington Township Community Building. For more information, contact Kemble at (574) 772-7746.
A preliminary meeting has also been set for July 10 at 5 p.m. CT at the elementary school to discuss the logistics on what the board is expecting for the demolition.
According to Kemble, the board plans to put the property to use after the demolition is complete.
“Nothing is set in concrete yet, but we’re looking at possibly renovating the large baseball field and small baseball field. We’re also looking at possible future plans of new swing sets and new playground equipment. Once the school is torn down, if the slab of concrete is intact, we’re looking at basketball courts or even a gazebo for outdoor weddings,” she said.
Those projects could begin sometime next year and the demolition of the building could begin this fall.
