Deadline Approaching to Register to Vote in May Special Election

This year may be an off-year for elections, but there will be a special election in Starke County this May.

The Knox Community School Board is offering a public question on the May ballot that concerns a construction and rehabilitation project at the Palmer Wing section of the Knox Elementary School. The school board has conducted studies and received public input about the need to reconstruct a portion of the building and remodel another section in order to move forward with education needs at the facility.

The public question that will be on the May ballot states that the project “would not cost not more than $16,000,000 and is estimated to increase the property tax rate for debt service by a maximum of $0.2802 per $100 of assessed valuation.”

Public testing of the voting machines is Wednesday, March 27 at 1 p.m. CT on the first floor of the Starke County Courthouse. If you have not yet registered to vote in Starke County, or have gotten married and changed your name or are new to the county, the last day to register to vote in the election is Monday, April 8, which is also the first time absentee voting is available. The election will be Tuesday, May 7.

Voters in the following precincts will be eligible to vote in this election: California 1 and 2, Center 1-6, and Washington 1 and 2.
