Firefighters were busy responding to various calls this weekend.
Spring fever has hit and everyone has been out cleaning yards and burning unwanted brush and leaves. Firefighters ask that you not burn anything outside on days where the gusty winds are forecast. It’s safer to put off until a calm wind is predicted in order to burn things outside.
Knox-Center Township Fire Chief Kenny Pfost said his department was called out to four fire calls and Winamac Fire Chief Bill Weaver said there were two roadside fires and a rather large woods fire that required the help of Monterey and Star City Fire Departments to extinguish. The Hamlet and Washington Township Fire Departments were also out on several calls over the weekend. North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Chief Joe Leszek reported a quiet weekend, while the San Pierre Fire Department had two fires on Friday.
Keep in mind that there is a Starke County ordinance that outlines what can and can not be burned on your property and there is no burning of any kind allowed in the city of Knox.
